COM4 should be ok. Not tried a Chinesium USB Serial for many years, as I now use an FTDI adapter on both my Macbook & windows for various serial stuff.

The error you got looks like a windows driver issue.

nope. but in the Details tab, change the Property to Hardware ID. you can then copy the Value string, and paste into Google search.

I have this information but what one is the one to search for the driver as I used the top one and it's sending me into ateas I'm not comfortable with.

Can you advise?

it will do. You have a chinese chipset, so you need their driver.

You might get away with the driver from this page https://learn.sparkfun.com/tutorials/how-to-install-ch340-drivers/all

Before you install it, you need to delete any Microsoft driver first. See post #31 in this thread. (I suspect the "wch.cn" is from Microsoft, hence your issues.)

Also disable MS Automatic Updates.

That's done the trick.

I now have comms with the car and laptop

Removed the faults and fixed the issues and it seems as we are back in business
