No, the fuel filter (bolted to the bulkhead)has the water drain and has nothing to do with water in the engine.
OIL filter needs changing, along with the oil, the oil filter is mounted to the side of the engine low down on the glowplugs side . I would say drivers side but yours may be LHD?

Ok , I just thought it was too full and could take some water together with the fuel .

Ok , I'll go right now grab this chain wrench and a bit more oil then , it doesn't matter if it is another brand as long as it is the same 15w40 isn't it ?
 
Just let an egg cup full of fuel out, any water will be at the bottom and I doubt if there is much or any water there to be honest.
Yes to the oil question, just slacken the oil filter until the oil stops running before removing it completely. It'll go everywhere so get a large mouthed drain pan, lots of rags and roll your sleeve up cos it'll get oily otherwise.

There is a drain plug on the FUEL filter.
There is no drain plug on the OIl filter.
The bulk of the engine oil is drained from the sump plug but some is held in the oil filter and it is this that can run down your arm/possibly make a mess.
The sump drain plug is on the passenger side of the sump near the bottom.
Tbh, I wouldn't change the oil/filter until you've done the compression test, you may be wasteing your money.

But what about the water that I could have dropped in when I forgot to drain it before removing the head as turboman said ?
 
Well, you wouldn't want to leave it in there for weeks of course but if you think you'll be doing the compression tests in the next few days, leave it alone.
If you change the oil and filter, do the test and find the engine needs further work you'll have to drain the oil again and you shouldn't really reuse it again.
If you drained it at the rad there won't be lots of water in there, it'll be fine until you can do the compression test.

Just tried to changed the fuel filter and started by draining water from the screw underneath , there was LOADS , then tried to change the filter but the "receiver" is not the same ... pic of the one on the car (left) and the one I ordered described as for 200tdi

On the left you have a CAV type fuel filter, as fitted to a 2.5NA/TD.

On the right in the pic is a Bosch type fuel filter, as fitted to a 200 Tdi
 
Turbo man is correct, your engine is 200tdi but the rest is 2.5na/TD.
Mine was a 1986 2.5na which I've fitted with a 200tdi but I used the 200tdi fuel filter housing as well .
Maybe you should put a pic up of anything you intend to change or fiddle with and we can advise and save you these little inconveniences. The air filter for instance could be NA or disco /Defender and they are all different.
Are you sure it was water from your fuel filter? Diesel doesn't look much different to an untrained eye.

Yes I will next time , I didn't know , I thought all the piping/housing would be swapped. Well now I know.
Yes definetly , a lot of water then fuel,
It was more like yellowy colour and didn't smell anything , I even try to light it up with a lighter to make sure , then at some point, fuel ( much clearer and smelly ) came out but really A LOT of water , we are talking a good 30sec to 1 min of heavy leaking

Diesel doesnt light with a lighter. It needs to be sprayed from an injector or soaked into a rag before it burns.
 
Oh ok, I didn't know that , but anyway just by the smell it was obvious when the water stopped and the fuel started

Might be an idea to do some background reading about how diesels work if you are planning to maintain and repair your own vehicle! :)

Water in fuel is one of the most common problems with diesels, well worth draining the water out every few weeks, and change the filter element at least once a year.
 
You could throw match in a drum of diesel, and it would just go out, but if you are ever unsure, just dip some tissue in, and then see if that lights.

If there was that much water in there, it may have worn the injection parts by cavitations etc.
 
Could explain the smoke and crap running too.
There is a plug on the fuel tank, might be worth draining some off from there and see if the tank is full of it as well. Or bite the bullet and drain the lot and refill with fresh diesel.

I just got the car last month , I drove it back from birmingham and did less than 50 miles before that happened ! I am reading non stop but I am starting from pretty much 0 :/ and never owned a diesel before

I got the injector tested but could have it worn something else ?

Ok, so would it be same principle ? would the water come out first ? I just went to the petrol station and filled a 10L can to fill it up today
