hi guys .. new to this forum and i am obsessed with my freelander 1 Always wanted to know this .. whats the highest mileage you guys have reached on a k series engine? I've heard they are unreliable but mine has gone past 180, 000 miles and still going strong ...
 
Mine had 179,987 when i sold it..

Bought with 179,789 :confused::D paid £150 for it!!

Having had the gasket done at 45 it will be due another one soon!

I liked mine, couldn't stand the gearbox though, geared all wrong, and it felt like stirring a spatula in a bowl of rocks..

horrible!! :(

Gearboxes are not the best. Rover used them in lots of cars anorl. The 220 Turbo sitting on my drive has a PG1 I believe and that was Rover's best effort at a super-car.

I knew of a 1.6 K Rover 45 with 250K miles on it. :eek:
It rattled a bit from the top end when started, but that could have been down to incorrect head gasket replacement, blocking the oil ways in the head (wrong sealer used), which is common.:confused:
I'm pretty sure that 45 had 3 HGs over it's life span, unfortunately it's not about any more, as it failed it's MOT on rust, and wasn't worth fixing due to the high mileage. :(

The K series isn't unreliable at all, HG issues excepted.

The design was and still is groundbreaking, unfortunately the materials needed to keep this advanced engine design sealed up tight weren't up to the job, so HG issues occurred.

However I don't think it's much hardship to replace the HG properly at say 70K intervals, as the rest of the engine is pretty indestructible.

For me, I think the K series is actually more reliable than that BMW sourced hunk of junk fitted to the TD4 FL1.:eek: The K series is definitely cheaper to repair, when issues do crop up occasionally. ;)

Reluctantly had to let it go at 220K miles, not due to engine, just rest of it was falling apart .. most fun car I ever owned !

Shame you had to let it go!

Did you ever do the HG on it? would be interesting to think that a K-Series 1.8 managed 220K without a failure!
 
Now at 330,000km - but HG has been done more than once. Have just replaced the clutch and I suspect it may have been the original one.
