Johnny, what a thread.

Great build, and despite all the issues, a great finished article. Made me wish I'd bought a series :p

shes come in more than useful today boys n gurls first off this morning she tow started a transit tipper with a smashed starter motor then took half a pallet of common red bricks to the brother in laws without any trouble and took the trailer full of smashed flags crap and god knows what else off his drive and to the tip just over 1 ton on the weighbridge and pulled like there was nothing on the back

just getting into the estate again through the lanes and theres a fiesta in the middle of a big puddle so with me feet ****ed through anyway did me good deed for the year and pulled the bloody thing to the end of the lane and onto a safe street of the estate so the RAC could find her

also took the 4 yr old daughter to the docs with her tonsilitus as they keep fobbing me missus off with just give her more calpol finally getting her seen propperly and a prescription for antibiotics ( that creamy banana stuff :D mmmmm)

then a dash down to tescos pharmacy to get it and the final piece of me missus crimbo prezzie while i was at it

all me praises to minnie the tratter shes been a star today :praise::praise:

X3 Excellent news and a hell of a busy day for you !!! BTW that banana medicine is good !! my little guy has been on it recently :)

well the enjoyment didnt last verry long laydees n gents

in the last couple of weeks it started being a barsteward to start so me thinking its just the cold weather continued to use her

then i got this horrible rattle knocking noise from the top of the engine so i inspected the valve gaps and found i had 4 verry sticky valves so this weekend ive spent yesterday afternoon right up to midnight last night fitting brand new valves and guides £120 down the spout

so started the ritual scrub up of the block before refitting the head and i looked down the cam follower holes to see theres only 1 follower of any reasonable condition in the entire set and the other 6 either have a large chip missing or worse 3 of them have a quater smashed out of them ( gonna cost another ton this is )

its also caused the greif of having to remove the sump and find the missing bits in the crank case and re-inspect all the journals big ends and evrything else for signs of damage :mad:

so it looks like im not gonna get to play in the snow again this time round

Chin up Johnny, you will get there, I mean, what else could possibly go wrong.

at the moment i suppose its better to look at it as in the bright side

if i hadnt embarked on the valves to cure this latest load of smoke and dodgy rattle i wouldnt have spotted the followers and therefore could have written the engine off possibly the landy aswell :rolleyes:

some blessings come in the guise of trouble sometimes :)

i've just named my new series 3 project Mickey for the very same reason, although i found mine behind the clocks. surprisingly no wire have been chewed through.

reet ive been through hell and back today i now have a full brand new set of valves , halve guides , all lapped in and brand new stem oil seals and a full set of brand new cam followers brand new head gasket a genuine landrover NOS thermostat rated at 82 degrees full set of brand new glow plugs and a renthal timing chain fitted

i cant divulge prezactly how much this lot cost me just incase the missus sees this :behindsofa:

shes now fully back together at the moment and i only have to drop the oil and the sump to strain all the bits of shattered **** out of it then put that back together then i can try and start the bitch :D:D:D

and just as a terstament to british engineering the state of these followers and the bugger still ran ok ( youll never see that happen with a rice burner ) :D:D:D

Hi Johnny I have seen that happen when the push rods aren't located properly ie sitting on the side and not in the cup. also on TDI's when the belt snaps.

Yes, don't want to teach granny to suck eggs but before nipping up the rockers: loosen off each tappet bol until you can move the rod up and down freely and make sure its centred in the cup, do that for each one then crank by hand to check none are too loose or too tight then set tappets as normal. I nearly did it to mine until a mate reminded me that he'd saved me from the exact same mistake once already!
