1.8's suffered a lot of gead gasket failures. They run hot. A lot of it were probably not helped by the shape of the coolant reservoir. They crack around the hole at the top so the coolant system loses pressure. There were some issues in production but they got sorted out. There's much discussion over the gasket. Newer mls one came oot which was fort to be betterer. Hgf can be fixed but it can happen again. In modern cars like the freelander it shouldn't really happen. Most peeps will drive for a life time and not have hgf. To have it happen spooked many owners so they flog em after fixing em. Tis a shame. 1.8 was an old rover k series design which was a more modern version of an older rover design. Powerful little unit. But the later Td4 diesel was so good it were bonkers to buy a petrol.
The K series engine has poor cooling as the water jackets in the head are too small.
