That sounds like a very good idea to me. I've not had a lathe for a good many years and I'm feeling the lack. I think rather than a brand new budget one, if I had £3000 to spend I'd go for a decent used one. Something about the size and weight of a Colchester Student would do me very well indeed. I met a man selling one a few years ago, but I was trying to buy a piece of land at the time and wasn't really thinking much about lathes, so I missed it.

I see a problem above............... Hes given the dosh away.

Re the Marlin,
A lot of peeps have said that it looks a lot like an Alfa like this one

an 8C so a straight 8. I could feasibly bolt two Pinto engines together, if I was mad enough!
But sticking with the idea of a fastback ariline type thing, this is what they did,

Or this which is well mad!!

But seriously, is there a more gorgeous looking car on the planet?

AND it won the Mille Miglia.

i'd better get off this or I'll get thrown off the LZ!!!

I don't remember where I learned of it, but I think pre-utube prolly, in a Classic mag methinks, someone made a straight 8 from 2 Alfa 4's to go into a replica 8Cylinders

Wasnt the Marlin based on the look of the alfa, I heard that when I had mine.

Right then my road trip..........got there & its wasnt raining superb cause it rained all the way doon.

Found a few things that werent in the listing like a couple of bits of welding that were fibre glassed
& not even tried to hide it either 🤣 All the seats were just flung inside not bolted in no biggy as I could lift the carpets out.
couple of bits I could see starting to bubble on the paint work. He had sent me additional pics showing me all round the car
obviously taken in 2022 when it first came from africa. I said I wasnt looking for another project & was ready to walk away
he immediately said his reserve was 3k & id won the bid at £4661. He said no mechanic down there would look at it & its
getting ruined sitting outside what did I think it was worth to me....I said a grand & youd be better getting it properly registered that will give it a much higher value even without doing the repairs. He'd had enough of it as he paid £15500 for it including
the shipping. Then spent 2k getting all the interior & door cards re-trimmed in leather plus a sound system in the boot.:eek:

After spending months back & forward with the dvla paper work he's cutting he losses. He said would I give him 1500 for it
I pondered for & mo then said 1200, he then came back with 1400 I said ok if it runs good, then my wee bro said theres no
water in the rad can you get some (yup no probs) poured it in & it had a leak from a rotten core plug. Ah ffs he said just
give me a grand & take it away. Hurry up bro drive it onto the trailer & lets go 🤣🤣

How many cars have yer gottid?

Wasnt the Marlin based on the look of the alfa, I heard that when I had mine.
The answer to that is buried somewhat.
Paul Moorhouse built the original for trials, others saw it and liked it so much they asked him to build more for them and in the end he decided to commercialise the kits. apparently they were pretty successful in trials. the rad surround really does look Alfa shaped. So it may be that he thought that the basic Alfa shape would be good for trials and why not give a nod to the 6c 1750

Connect the front wing to the rear wing and there you go, a Marlin, more or less.

Which is why I have always wanted to mod the door top and the screen, plus put a strip down the side to make it look more like it. TBH having driven mine for yonks the cutout in the top of the door would really make it a lot more practical.

So the short answer is, I don't know. When you had yours did you not join the Marlin Owners' club? I could ask them I suppose!
They have a website, it might be on there.

How many cars have yer gottid?
1 Discovery TD5, two Disco 1s (a 300tdi anniversary and a V8), the wife's Pluriel, her Chesil Speedster, and my Carisma Century in bits in the garage awaiting my finishing it off. Oops forgotid the Marlin!
Only the TD5 and the Pluriel are not SORNed. And none of the others are driveable at the moment, without some, or a lot of, work. These were going to be my projects when I retired, but life has got in the way!

In case anyone thinks I am "well-wedged" we bought the Anniversary on a loan years ago, it was about 6 years old at the time and we needed something to tow 3.5 tonnes reliably back and forth to France. The Pluriel cost W 3k, the Marlin cost me £2.5 k back in 1988, the V8 cost £1250, the Chesil was a ton of money but the wife wanted one so she took out a loan for it, and I won the kit to build the Carisma in a competition from Which Kit? magazine! The TD5 cost £1850 I think, back in 2014, bought in an emergency as I had to stop driving due to my meningioma and we needed an auto for W.
Still a banger motorist at heart!

Yes I did feel so sorry for him at the time, I dont feel meen so nope to that.
I did tell him to do the paper work an sell it for a lot more & id just go home, all id lost was my time n fuel money so I wasnt
bothered. The importers should feel bad for taking that amount of money & not giving a detailed report of its condition.
He wanted a 240z but the importers told him this was mint & a lot nicer so he took the bait.

On the other hand he could have said no but he'd had enough of it & wanted it gone.
The auction price was £4461 which I took with me & a bit more, if was as minted as it looked id have given him a bit extra.

Win some loose some, yer pays yer money yer take yer chance.........
