@AL1975 , just read the post and your, theoretical, dilemma. As others have said, just drive your new Defender and enjoy every minute that goes with buying a new mechanical mistress.

Although it may appear to have a chequered history, there are 100's/1000's out there with similar histories where previous owners have changed chassis, body, body styles, engines, gearboxes, axles to improve performance/driveability...and their whole interiors simply to upgrade.

I can share my Def90 history with you if this helps. Originally a Military GS 90 hardtop with 2.5n/a engine...a bog std MOD 90. Previous owner/s replaced the 2.5n/a engine with a 200tdi engine and converted from a hardtop to a soft top, adding a full through to chassis Safety Devices external roll cage...and a very nice job they've done too. Now, not long after I bought the 90 the engine went into wobbly mode so I decided to bite the bullet and buy a brand new uprated Turner Engineering 200tdi engine. This has lead me down the slippery slope of piling a bucket load of cash into the 90 replacing/refurbishing/improving everything under the bonnet, all new suspension, total refurbish of the chassis and underbody +++ a whole lot more. But the point is, my 90 is far from original and I intend to enjoy every last minute of the old girl. Holiday with her, Alpine tours, a bit of off-roading, trips to local rural pubs with friends and family...and just having a mass of fun:)

So, I don't think you have too much to worry about. You've simply bought an upgraded 90 that should be enjoyed. Not sure about you but when I buy a new toy part of the relationship journey is for us guys to bond with our mechanical mistresses...and there's nothing better than giving your new toy a thoroughly good service changing all her fluids, giving her bush/es and joint nipples a good greasing...and clean her inside out, every last crevice, until she's gleaming. That way you have an old bus you're proud of and, like any mistress, you get to know her every foible;)

Good luck with your new 90 and go out and have some fun :D

Greasing the nipples !! - Dear Lord this is not the Top Totty thread :D:D

Yeah, I’m thinking about giving her a roasting with a MAP burner, a whack with the lump hammer before heaving a 29 on her rusty nut. Failing that it’ll be a new oil pan bitch

Dont have to go that far, could just drill it out and replace it with a new one, effectively greased or copaslipped!

It's bad enough laying on yer back doing kerbside motors without attempting a feat of engineering that would impress Jimmy De Ville

...err, you could syphon the oil out, or pump it out like I do. Then take trhe sump off and into your garage/workshop, then drill it out at your ease, or use any other sort of method you choose.
I had to do exactly that with wifey's Citroen Pluriel and getting that sump off and back on again was a real bitch. But drilling a bigger hole and threading it then fitting a bigger sump plug was easy. Still cheaper than a new sump and if you want to fit a new sump you have to take the old one off and put the new one on. so the same amount of work, just more expensive!
Just saying!

I'm hoping a decent fitting socket and some real heat will coax the phooker to submit. If that fails I'm going to set fire to it.

Thanks that has actually made me feel a lot better

V5 says engine number is 11L13348A.

11l should be a 200tdi engine. Just one source.
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Land_Rover_engines

As I have said previously the td5 number is a PITA to read at times. Did you look in the right place?

I'm hoping a decent fitting socket and some real heat will coax the phooker to submit. If that fails I'm going to set fire to it.
My problem one is on a D2 TD5 and the big prob is that the sump plug is shallow and the socket inevitably does not go directly to a nice 6 sided or 12 sided one. I suppose one way forward would be to cut the edge off the socket so that it grips better and doesn't just slip off. I have also thought of welding a bigger nut on to it then that would give me a much better chance of getting it off. but i don't want to strip the thread in the sump. So for the moment I just pump the oil out whenever I need to change it. Problem on the other car was different in that the sump plug had stripped the thread so the sump had to come off to sort it all out. but in essence the problem is much the same.
If you use heat without emptying the oil out then you'll be wasting your time and potentially risking a fire, depending on what heat source you use. The oil in the sump will just take the heat away. so advice is still the same as in previous posts.

yeah i did but sent the V5 straight off. def got his number i remember he was Northampton way.

V5 has not had previous owners name/address on it for some time now, think it was down to GDPR.

If I was you I would be removing any pics that can identify your car, ie post with vin details and pics of vin number, just imagine if someone made a ringer of your one!

Totally +1 on that. I did mean to post about removing the pic of the vin niumber, you never know who is reading this forum!

I've bought three land rovers in the UK in the past and every single one of them had a problem with either the VIN or the paperwork. The DVLA are absolutely useless, the whole system is highly flawed in the UK and is probably one of the easiest countries in Europe where you can 'hide' a stolen vehicle.
1. Discovery 2 - partially rusted chassis number... spent about three months sorting it out
2. Series 3 ex military. MOD release certificate was hand written. Letter 'A' on the chassis was interpreted as a 'H' on the paperwork (V5) . Again spent ages sorting it out.
3. Range Rover P38 is all factory and low KMs. Originally French. When imported to UK owner simply declared the 4.0 V8 is really a 3.0 liter V8 (which doesn't exist) to avoid paying higher taxes. The VIN decodes as a 4.0 V8 but obviously no-one in the DVLA gave a ****. It is currently with the seller since November as I said I will only take it and pay for it if and when he sorts out the paperwork so that it is correct and I can export/register abroad. With the lock down in place goodness knows when I will have it.
