Ive just bought my Station Wagon which is apparently ex Royal Navy. Is there any way I can confirm this? Also, as i'm new to the Land Rover world despite wanting one for years is mine a rarity? Haven't seen many around. Cheers in advance
 
They usually have a military id plate on the drivers seat box with its military reg and contract number. It'll have been a civvy spec as it has rear doors and seats so may not have any military evidence on it.
 
The mod often buy or lease civvy spec vehicles for more domestic duties. This could have been used as general transport around one of their uk bases/ports.
 
Does the rear crossmember have no PTO hole? If not it's military, but as posted you'd expect ID plates. I'd say looking at it that it's a very original looking 12 seat safari LWB and irrespective of whether it's military its nowadays relatively rare. It's not an original paint finish but that can be fixed. Whatever you do keep it original if possible. Fully refurbished it'd be quite valuable. Front bumper will be the first thing to go, I cant stand it. PTO hole? I need some front seats as been changed for Fiesta Mk2 items. Other than that its original bar carpets that i'm already removing plus a few other bits fitted to make more comfortable - they are going too.
 
Power Take Off.....

The PTO is a facility to run equipment from the PTO output from the transfer box.....the rear cross member would have a large diameter hole through it where the PTO drive shaft would go to be attached t othe transfer box in the centre of the vehicle.
 
At the time of the S3, the Navy did have some LRs with proper seats etc for use at its various outward bound training places, many in Wales. See if you can find evidence of dark blue paint. IIRC there were others for use on air stations that were red like your roof, for aircrew type duties. Also Navy is not Military! The number plate would have been xxRNxx
 
It's got all round mud guards which will protect from chassis rot to the rear crossmember and front outriggers. OP update on suggestions?
 
Thanks for the information everybody, it does have signs of dark blue paint in certain places so you never know but it does have a PTO! The chassis is the original and unwelded, it has been waxoiled for years and also cavity injected. The whole car is original bar some extra switches and a radio etc. Desperately want some original driver and front passenger seats though as Fiesta Ones have been fitted. Currently using it as my everyday car doing around 16 miles a day and really loving it.
 
I suspected it would have the hole for a PTO. As per earlier response it's likely to be a civilian version possibly used by RN. They used them around naval bases. It would look good in the blue. You can get seats from various places. Does it still have the seat frames and mounting rails? Try Exmoor Trim to get an idea of the cost, they are more expensive than some other.
