Just getting back to insurance for a moment, I wonder how they work out the additional charges. I've just filled in an email enquiry form on my insurer's website asking if there would be any additional charge if I fitted LED sidelights and indicators, and a spare wheel carrier. They replied pretty quickly - in about an hour - and said that would be £20.01. Hmm. I haven't bought the accessories yet, just wondered what they would say, but where does the 1p come from I wonder?

Well, I've ordered the accessories and phoned my insurers to accept the quote. First of all they were under the impression I'd asked for 'rally lights' to be taken into account rather than the LED sidelights and indicators, and won't accept my money until the items are actually fitted to the car. So this suggests that they've just formulated the quote from a manual that says such and such a charge for additional lights, whatever they are.

I think the answer to avoid policy adjustment fees, is to plan your modifications, when you fill out the modification form have a list of "planned modifications during the course of this policy" for stuff you will fit etc. this will avoid unnecessary admin charges.

There should be a quoted charge for any adjustments in your policy documents, and it should have been quoted on the phone, I can't remember the exact charge on my policy, I think she said £30 odd quid, I gawked at it, said something like "it's going to cost me 30 odd quid every time I add a spare wheel carrier, a decent sat-nav/computer or something?" it depended what the modification was, so I decided to add everything I planned to fit on the mod list. Problem solved.
