right. discs arrived today, had a good read through Haynes and thought "****! i'm not sure i can do this!!" its the later hub with the circlip. it goes on about 'half-shaft end-float specifications' i've done a search and others have just said tighten it up to seat the bearings, then back a bit.
im going to get a hub spanner and some locking compound tomorrow. i can probably do it but dont want to **** it up this close to the trip!
any tips or hints please?
if not i'll just have to live with it for now
Piece of cake, replace rear hub seal, pack with grease, tighten up first locknut, put steel spare wheel on hub so you can adjust freeplay with a wheel on, tighten second locknut......bear in mind that tightening second locknut will take up more tolerance so you may need to back off first locknut a little to allow for this, when happy bend over locktabs.
Screw a bolt into end of driveshaft to hold it in place while you put the circlip back on, you'll probably need only one shim
isnt it easy to feel the point play is removedWell put its an art getting that first locknut just right
front or back ? front just replace what shims you take off it really isnt that critical, disc bolts are 14mm bihex ,only hit disc never hub to remove disc ,hub will damage easily ,wheel bearings adjust first nut till tight back off till theres play adjust till all free play has just been eliminated ,then fit lock washer and tighten 2nd nut tight lock washer over both nuts adjacently
will do, ta mateget a 1/2 bihex socket for caliper bolts too while getting 14mm bihex as hex socket wont fit
will do, ta mate
cheers chaps. though i will probably bottle out last minute and leave it til after the trip!
If you can get it up to Camberley, I'm more than willing to give you a hand anyday this week. I did both front wheel bearings on mine last month.
WTF are you doing up this time of day, you **** the bed or summat???
Someone came in, turned the main light and told me his shirt wasn't black, so that was it, now I'm awake
thanks james, i'll take the plunge (its front btw) i better get a bihex socket as well as i've only got hex and it probably won't fit (?) i'm also going to ring a local 4x4 parts supplier first, to see if they've got bearings in stock (in case they fall to bits!)
im comin down south tomoro guys :cheer2:..... brace yourselves
