is there a way to test a coil pack? or is it plug spark plug in and turn car over if it sparks, coil is working?

That's the test ;)
Not seen the early Bremi coils fail completely. However the insulation can deteriorate, causing a misfire. When the coils are out, check for hardening/ crystallisation of rubber insulation. The later pencil coils fail far more readily.
The coil can be tested with a plug pushed into it. However this isn't recommended as if the both the coil surround and plug are grounded correctly, ECU damage can result.
I'd do a visual check and clean the coil only.

right spark plugs/coils

below pics are 1-3 on first bank
as you can see there is a lots of crud on the end of the ht lead, not sure why? and none of the plugs where in tight ,prob not much tighter than hand tight

next are the back 3 with coil ,the middle coil is def newer than other 2

the above is the newer one

again very crusty on end of rubber, what courses that?
also before i go buy some how do the plugs look?

pps how do you clean a coil?

HOLLY **** BATMAN!!!!
just nipped to holland to see if they stocked the spark plugs if i do need them ,WOW no way am i getting any from over here ,hopefully cheaper in UK!!!!

HE WANTED 38 euros ! which i was ok with till he said EACH!!!!!!!!!!!!!
no way am i paying 228 euros for 6 plugs!!!!!!!!

regapped the plugs, should be 1mm (040) or so it said on the google search (its a big gap!)

anyway all same now as some where less and some where well over 1mm

then to remove the crusty stuff off the rubber on coils and ht leads
then checked for splits/cracks all looks ok ,but this is what came off them ,any ideas what it it?

then ive sprayed the ends with silicon spray, hope that was ok ?

Those are the factory fitted plugs. So they have been changed with OE plugs or they are the originals. The electrode looks past its best to me. Get them in the UK. OE plugs can be had for around £25 a set plus shipping.
The plugs should be gapped at 1 mm and should only be hand tight at 25 Nm.
The coils can be cleaned with good old WD40.

cool i must admit i was kinda thinking there the original plugs ,i will def order from the uk

what about the ht leads? ive got all the crap off the ends and cant see any cracks/rips in the rubbers or leads

would a ohms test prove anything on them? or will that just prove theres a conection but how good they are

A resistance test can be used to check the condition of the leads. All should have a similar resistance, give or take.

got home from work, gave the ht leads a ohms test all where 9.34 at 20k on metre
next the 3 coils, using the out side posts they where all 010 at 200 on the metre

so both tests on all three of the items gave all three at same reading so assuming all three coils and ht leads are good or all crap lol

hopefully all good lol

well i must say im getting rather :censored:
with this car !!! got new spark plugs today ,found a place over here that did them for 11 euros each ,so much better than i had been quoted at a dif shop

anyway there all in ,all back together and yep still flagging up misfire code,P0300

reset and now comes up with the
p0300,
p1319 -----torque comes up with seat, audi,vw KNOCK SENSOR 1 CIRC.SHORT TO GROUND

no idea what that is lol i assume some sensor somewhere

so now that and still have the bloody misfire

any ideas apart from a can of fuel and a match lol

The knock sensors are in the V , one in each bank near cylinders 3 and 4. They are round plastic things with a bolt through the centre and a wire out of the side. Have you trapped a wire in the inlet manifold flange when fitting?

There you are. I've ringed the Knock sensors.

i bloody hope not :(:(

hope i will not have to take all part again :confused::mad:
which one is circ,1
any more ideas ref the misfire?

all this just because of high 02 on idle ,and still not solved yet lol

It's easy to pinch a wire in the inlet manifold flange. I've seen it done. I'm not sure how a knock sensor down would affect the running but I suspect it could mess with the timing somewhat. Check the wiring carefully with a torch. The knock sensors use a common plug so can't be changed separately. They are generally very reliable however.

right this misfire

any one have any ideas???
its starting to pee me off now ,ive changed the plugs,no airleaks, leads seem ok and on a ohms test coils seem ok (but was done when cold!)

what else could it be??
would a blocked injecter do this? if so would some radex stuff help

any ideas would be brill

cheers

An ohms test is unlikely to show up a coil where the HT side is breaking down.
Could be a faulty lead as these days they are not a simple copper core.
A duff injector could cause a misfire.
Just general comments as I do not know the Freelander.

Stab in te dark.

Years ago I had a random misfire on me spitfire. I only got to look at it at dusk when I arrived at me mates house and then it was obvious what was happening. Sparks tracking down a load of carbonised oil that was on the coil cap. they had burnt cracks into the insulator so I decided to get a new coil rather than clean up the old one.

Fixed it.

I dunno if the hippos has multiple coil packs (I have a TD4)but if it doesn't try looking at the distributor or whatever it has and the coil - after dark helps.

Mmm. It seems that early engines have but one coil and a distributor.

So if yours is like that, I'd suggest an after dark visual inspection with the engine running. If the spark is tracking you will see it all right.

Distributor cap is so cheap its not worth not replacing and the coil is not big money either
