Tony

Just cut four squares of thick rubber cut out a hole in the centre of each to make a washer. Loosen all the bolts off then put it up on ramps (not sure axle stands will do.)
Remove each bolt in turn and insert rubber washer between chassis and subframe. It is pretty impressive, the noise goes away along with lots of other noise from the back end. I did mine two years ago and its had three MOTs since, no problem.

Yea mine pops side lights and panel lights pretty often.

But hey! its done 179K and I should expect problems!

2001 Td4 Auto

Total gearbox meltdown
IRD disintegration
rear and passenger side window electrics failed
De-lamination of all intercooler hoses
Both fuel pumps failed around 110,000Km
Water pump
Thermostat
Every water leak known to mankind
Electrical fault that cuts engine when blinker/indicator used - this has happened 3 times, something to do with the key (apparently) replaced twice under warranty and wife hits the key barrel with shoe now every time it faults - doesn't want to spend $800 to fix. The second one - there was a fire under the dashboard.

A colleague also had a Freo (first model diesel before Td4). IRD went, $7000 fix. Steering issues, electrical issues.

Recommendation - get a VW or a Mazda. The go 100s of 1000s of Kms without problems based on my experience.

My IRD RHS oil seal has now gone. Also the main engine oil seal between it and the auto box has started leaking. v6 auto 2001. Only just replaced the air con clutch bearings today. All premature failures.

well, so far blown turbo hose, window winder mechanism shredded itself, interior lights dont work from switch, and fuel pump sometimes doesn't.

But its fairty old so not too unhappy.

just an in-house poll on the most common Freelander 1 problems,

Please vote and try to explain any of your FL faults and problems in a post below.

Please try to keep the problem to a fault or premature failure rather than wear and tear.

Thanks

my mrs owned a 2001 td4 a couple of years ago, biggest load of rubbish ive ever owned, i had it 12 months glad to see the back of it.

front window regulator £200

i have owned a 300 tdi disco and a 200 tdi defender for best part of ten years, and the both of them have not cost me as much as that freelander cost in 12 months
