Hi,

After searching through all the previous posts for the 3 amigos syndrome it would appear my 99 1.8 Freelander has something else up causing the lights to come on.

All 3 lights come on (TC, HD, and ABS). They can stay on for a long period of time, 100 miles at times, then just go out, quite often caused by a bump in the road etc.

Strangely though, when the lights are out and I brake normally (i.e. not hard) it seems that the ABS is trying to work (the brake pedal pulses)

When the lights are on, the brakes work fine with no ABS kicking in.

I have changed the brake pedal switch, and had all the wheel sensors checked for resistance. 1 of them was reading a very low resistance, so this was replaced with a new one.

Has anybody else experienced a similar problem with the ABS kicking in? perhaps I have a more serious issue with the ABS itself?

Any advice would be welcome.

Many thanks

Ian

Yes, I've got exactly the same symtoms on 2001 TD4. The three lights were coming on and off randomly for some time, now mostly on all the time. Coming out of the shopping centre yesterday and braking slightly before turning left on to the main road, I felt a pulse on the brake pedal and the lights went out. I pulled in and stopped for a minute, then when I drove on It felt as though the front nearside brake came on for an instant and the three lights came back on. It still seems to drive ok with the lights on, but I wonder if the ABS would actually work properly if needed. I've also changed the brake switch. The local garage says they can read the fault codes same as LR testbook so I may take it in and see what they can make of it.

dont worry about it!
banished the 3 amigoes myself last week just before the MOT.

3 simple steps:
1, take the dashboard apart
2, Remove HDC, ABS, and TC bulbs
3, Rebuild dash.

Who needs ABS anyway?

Could that be the one I've just bought. The Bulbs had been removed, I didn't know about that until I'd bought and read a handbook. Also reverse lights are not working. I have just replaced the brake light switch (1998 1.8).

Any other thoughts.

Re Three lights on. Took it to the local garage and they hooked it up to their test equipment and it showed front left ABS sensor fault. Went in below at home and sure enough the sensor ring on the drive shaft ( theres a proper name for it, but I can't remember it right now) which you can just see at the bottom of the hub was cracked and all corroded and you could turn it with your finger. Bought and fitted a new drive shaft with the new ring on it and a sensor unit, went for a test run and after 50 metres or so lights went out. They now come on and go out as normal on switch on. Parts bought were drive shaft £130 from a well known alternative supplier and a sensor unit at £36 which although a mega lot cheaper than LR looked good quality, on Fleabay and they are working ok, time will tell!.

2001 TD4 GS.

hi all,

can anyone tell me where the brakelight sensor is, as my 04 freelander has both tc and hd lights are now always on. Checked hd switch at gear stick and wiring seems ok.
thanks
