transfer, gearbox, axles were all done by the garage a couple of weeks ago... so i know they're good now

Yes....they are all meant fur a 200tdi... but ye get the idea. There's not that much difference really!

not really sure how much i paid someone else to do it to be honest... i asked them to do the wheel bearing, check the fluids and give it a pre-MOT basic checkover, so the labour was all included.
I know it was a simple job, but the diff guards are in the way of the diff filler plugs, I don't have a grease gun, and while it was in, I figured it was just easier this once.
i will definitely do it myself in future though!

very time you work on the disco you'll amass more and more tools and fluids, and soon you'll be able to do it all yourself
i did a full oil changes on a 300tdi yesterday, engine took about 7.5 litres with the filter.
pricewise, i bought a couple of britpart swivel kits, they come with everything and were about 70 odd inc vat, i think that was trade though.
you didnt pay terrible prices i suppose

hiya, just a couple of things.
if your old oil filter is difficult to remove, i`ve stabbed them with a screwdriver in the past and used the screwdriver as a handle. brutal, but works.
i was in halfrauds the other week and they were selling 10/40 semi for £15 a gallon. i did`nt buy any coz i`d just got some from a local motor factors for a little less.
basically, just try not to get too involved in what oil you want, everyones got a different opinion.

OK, so last oil question (hopefully)...
10W40 vs 15W40. I know what the difference is, but what is going to be better for my 153,000 mile 300Tdi?
The reason I ask is that a friend of mine might chip in as he needs some 10W40 for his car too, and given that my engine (and turbo!) has done 153,000 miles now, would 10W40 actually be better?

go for 10w40 and get it cheaper with your mate
best to buy a bulk drum through you know - speak to euro car parts! youll be suprised how cheap they sell it in 25ltrs
and there will be many stores local to you!
p.s. i just put 5w30 in that 300tdi yesterday, who gives a ****

OK, so I can get a 25 litre drum of 10W40 for £44.54 + VAT locally, but 15W40 is much harder to find, and is generally more expensive.
So 10W40 it is!
Plus, at running temperature it won't be any different, but when it's a cold morning it'll be a little easier for my 153,000 mile old engine and turbo!

how can I regret buying it in bulk? lol
£55 inc. VAT for 25 litres in bulk, or £56 inc. VAT for 8 litres from Halfords! Unbelievable.
So... i have the fuel filter, oil filter, sump washer (both sizes, just in case) buster's guides and the Haynes manual! All i need now is decent weather.

discool: as for shelf life, i'll service every 6,000 miles ideally. i do 15k per year, so call it 2 services a year. 7-8 litres per service, so it could all be gone in 12 months if I do 1 service now, another in 6 months and another in 12 months!

ooohhh... interesting calculation!
average 25p per mile at the moment. assuming diesel price doesn't rise (as if!), in 12 months I should burn through £3,750 of diesel.
Kinda depressing, that......
