hi, i have a 1992 discovery, yesterday i noticed that when i turn right and accelerate at the same time i gt a horrible banging noise which sounds like its cuming from the drivers side front, it doesnt do it when i turn left tho, the noise seems to be getting louder each time it happens, any ideas would be much appreciated

Just had similar problem with mine turned out to be wheel bearings although it could also be your CV joint breaking up. To test for wheel bearings jack up the suspect wheel clear of the ground and check it spins freely with no rumbling or grinding sounds. then grab it top and bottom ( 12 and 6 Position ) and wiggle it to feel for play. if you can feel play it's bearings Mine cost £16 for a kit and theres a vid on you tube about how to change em :)

CV's are more involved to change.

thanks for the reply but i put a wheel bearing kit in about 3 months ago so is it more likely to be the cv joint?

Yeah quite possibly CV then bud mines been doing it too lasted over a year clonking on full lock but it'll be done soon only did my bearings yesterday - when i took the hub nut dust cover and drive flange off they were covered in gunge and swarf  so I don't think it'll last much longer.

rite then iv bin outside looking at the disco and things dont look to good, there seems to be quite alot of play in the actual swivel unit, is this something that can be shimed or tightend in any way and would this cause the banging?

Swivel bearings then... Kits available from Paddocks and the like - you'll need a Haynes manual too as theres a proceedure for setting them up involving measuring the 'weight' of steering pull using a spring balance ( not a complicated as it sounds ) .

ok thanks for that ill visit a local place called landranger services tomorow and price the kit up, would this cause the noise tho or could it be the cv joint aswell?

I'd expect dodgy steering and to feel knocking through the steering wheel with the swivels weather on lock or driving straight especiallly on rough roads (read all british roads lol) so I'd suspect both maybe faulty only way to know for sure is to stip and inspect if your doing one job your might aswell do the other at the same time (two birds one stone). if the clonk is mostly on lock i'd say C.V's think they're around £30

bin to landranger services today and theyve told me that its the swivel bearings at the top and bottom aswell as the cv joint, ill be taking it to bits tomorow as i want to go do some laning at the weekend.

took it to bits today and found the problem, the top and bottom swivel house bearings are nackerd an the cv joint has smashed, and cant get the parts till nxt week

eventually finishd he rebuil on friday as there wos a problem getting the cv joint, only thing is iv still gt a banging noise but only occsional and cnt find what it is

Did you load the bearings and the new CV with grease when you installed them? Did you shim up the swivel pins?

Is this noise only there (after the rebuild) when you turn the steering wheel or does it happen in a straight line?

the banging noise is occasional but does it in a straight line and wen i turn when traveling, yes i filled them with cv grease. no i didnt shim them up as wen i put it back together there wos no play in the wheel.

ill bear in mind that you have some shafts because if the other side goes then ill need to change it straight away
