it all depends what tyres you have fitted. half worn road tyres arnt gunna do you any favours. why do you think winter tyres were invented? if the OP had the new bfgoodrich a/t's like what are on mine he would have got up that hill
 
yea i did consider driver error but then rememberd i saw a women driving a 300tdi disco up a hill today in snow and she managed it. i didnt want to insult the OP:D

It doesnt matter what you drive (4x4 stand a better chance of course), if the skills arent there ........... no chance
 
A Pajero would have at least limited slip diffs front and rear if not some clever electronics or even both. 'tis true the nut behind the wheel is most likely the issue here, if you don't know what you're doing it's a fair chance it'll get messy.
