tdi with double the old 135 bar injection pressure is a great direct injection engine without the staring issues of indirectTrue, my old Volvo boat engine was direct injection, no glow plugs, no battery needed, would start on the handle easily in an emergency. Very low revving though and very economical. The downside of modern very high pressure injection is the need for electronics, OK in a car, but has proved to be a liability in boats. More accurate metering of the fuel is the other big advance.
