Mates just got himself a 2001 diesel same as mine and the performance of his is streets ahead of mine, can't believe the difference to be fair. I've looked all over his and there is no wiring under the bonnet/ECU that shouldn't be there so I guess it's been chipped. Endtuning seem to have a good rep and I'd rather a chip then a plug in box , want it to look standard. I have no intention of booting it everywhere as I worry about the weaker (22?) autobox on the diesel but I would like the extra poke my mates has.
Anybody got the endtuning chip in their diesel auto?

Better to find out why yours is down on power. What is the modulation figure?

I don't think it is but his is the only other one I've driven. Mod is 50% ish. It goes well if I boot it but my mates goes very well without booting it, very strong mid range power, I was amazed TBF.

The Hp22 will cope with a chip, the diesel only produces a poultry 270nm compared to the 4.6's 407nm and the 4.0s 340nm so it'll cope,
That's what I'm hoping, I'm no chav in a fiesta ST but my mates just seemed more relaxing, much less throttle input needed to make reasonable pace, more drivable if you know what I mean.

I've read the V8 box is much stronger and with a bit of parts swopping it will fit. Just waiting, in the background, in the shadows for @kermit_rr to scrap his and I'll be up there with me socket set:D:D

Depends on the box. Not all years are the same. Some HP24 boxes swap straight over.

A good remap and the box may survive. As standard, the box needs a torque reduction on shifts in order to survive, power boxes and poor remaps abrogate this leading to early failure of the clutches

Some HP 24's are a straight swap, some need the oil pump from an HP22, in either case the HP22 bell housing and torque convertor is needed.

I took my 2000 DHSE to Jeremy J Fearn near Chatsworth House in Derbyshire. He specialises in tuning Bowlers and other Dakkar Rally spec vehicles. He hand-welded a humungous new Intercooler in Aluminium, remapped it and, over £2000 later (back in 2005)...it went like the proverbial scalded cat! The problem was, you could then watch the fuel gauge moving alarmingly as it supped diesel like a navvy on payday! I was doing upwards of 85k miles a year at the time, towing my large caravan around the UK every week instead of shelling out on Hotels. Fuel economy dropped to about 13 MPG towing, 17-19 MPG solo. I got rid and got an AUDI A8 3.0TDi Quattro Sport. I got about 25 MPG towing thereafter and a hugely entertaining drive when solo..especially after ProDrive re-mapped it...the torque was PHENOMENAL!

Pretty simple on the diesel. More power needs more fuel and there goes your MPG.

+1 find out why yours is lacking
I promise you same as Alan + Wammers did me - get it running right and itl be fast enough you won’t need a chip. Then it’s ready to chip and it will fly.
How many miles have you done in it? I’d still be filling it full of redex ready to drop the oil again at your stage

That's the problem, I don't know if mines lacking, I've only ever driven one other, my mates, which I'm convinced is chipped. Nanocom shows modulation at circa 50%, mpg is as it should be, starts instantly hot or cold, full service carried out too.
Reading about, lots of people are saying they are slugs, dangerous pulling out of junctions etc, I don't think that though, I just drive to suit the car and conditions, lovely motorway cruiser though! Most of my driving is town stuff though, lots of 30/40mph limits and lots of roundabouts/traffic lights so a bit more pep getting up to those speeds without using kick down would be welcome. I think I need to try my mates again to refresh how it went, what most stuck in my mind was how responsive the throttle was, much easier/relaxing to drive.
There's no way anyone could describe his as a slug so I'm sure it's chipped.
I don't know anyone else with a 38 around here, in fact, I've not seen another except for kermies and that's a V8.

I have 2, the high mileage project car is quicker off the mark than my daily driver, neither are chipped. I think the intercooler needs cleaning out on the daily, I have done it on the project car. I have no trouble keeping up with almost anyone off the line at the traffic lights.
My friend had his Defender remapped, goes like the brown stuff off the shovel but he has had constant engine problems since doing it.
IMO upping the power on old engines is asking for trouble. In the past for me, tuning would be accompanied by an engine rebuild. these days I'm more interested in reliability/longevity of the engine.
