And int this fooking forum doing ya head in with all these inserted Links that Google keeps shoving into ya posts. Fooking intrusive commercialism does me tits in.
Roy has to pay for it some how, getting new server that cost money.

And have minty serve up your wheatpic and wash your back and just chill:D:D:D

Whats wrong with sticking ads at the bottom of the page?? And did ya know that Google now tailors it's search result to what "IT thinks" yu should receive. So 2 different people searching for the exact same search query. will receive completely different results??" Talk about cenorship by stealth.

And have minty serve up your wheatpic and wash your back and just chill:D:D:D

She's 300 miles away. Gotta make me own brekkie now

Ya forgot increased/cooler air flow as it's fuel/air mixture that improves performance.

So bigger intercooler and increased fuel qty is the only way to improver performance. However if Fuel/air is electroinically controlled via an ECU then a chip may be able to alter the factory settings and supply more fuel/air.

Fitting a uprated chip isn't fitting a new inter-cooler!

By injecting more fuel the burn temperature increases, as the hotter exhaust gases spin the turbo faster, which in turn compresses the inlet air pressure before the inlet manifold, the extra heat is partly removed by the inter-cooler.

A new larger uprated inter-cooler should remove the extra heat, but most people don't fit a new inter-cooler so the extra heat reduces the density of the inducted air.

To gain the most from an upgraded chip you must also increase the density of the intake air by removing the extra heat , to keep the optimun fuel/air ratio for maximum power.

So the power increase for most upgraders comes from the extra fuel injected not the reduced inducted air temperture.

Oh, and the powerbox only confuses the injection ecm into injecting more fuel to gain more power, not adjusting the mpg display.

Hey there,

Want to get the ol P38 chipped - its a 2001 dHSE but don't want to have the ECU remapped so looking for the plug in chip-boxes. Seen quite a few on the market and wondered what people here thought of the varius options, both in terms of quality and after sales service.

I have had a read of all a few of the threads on here about this but haven't found any specific comments on particular brands ...

Spider - Offer a 5 Yr Warranty but no-one ever answers their phones so am not entirely confident I will get anywhere if there is a problem - Diesel tuning. SpiderĀ® diesel tuning performance systems for tuning all modern diesel cars vans and diesel truck.

DTS - Also offer 5 Yr warrantly - Are they the same as Spider?? Diesel Tuning and Performance tuningbox No1, chiptuning from the UK's experts

Rimmer Bros: Powerbox 2: Power Box 2 - Diesel Fuel Saver for Range Rover P38 at www.rimmerbros.co.uk - 3 yr guarantee (limited) - whatever that means.

PSI Power chip - on ebay - Range Rover P38 2000-2001 Diesel PSI Power tuning chip on eBay (end time 17-Mar-11 21:41:11 GMT)

Any thoughts, suggestions?

Cheers!
well for me none.

How can that be the only way to increase dramatically the bhp/torque in an otherwise unmodified diesel is to increase the fuel quantity injected. There is no other way of doing it. I wish all these idiots would stop coming on here and saying i had 150bhp and 350 lbs ft of torque doing 25 mpg. I fitted a XYZ chip and now have 190bhp, 450 lbs ft of torque and doing 30 mpg. IT'S NOT BLOODY POSSIBLE.

Not sure if you are calling me an idiot, but I was actually agreeing with you!

The reason I would expect that the fuel economy would be more or less the same is that for a given amount of power, you use a given amount of fuel, and there isn't a fat lot any chip can do to change that. Which is the point you keep making, and which I agree with. So unless you drive flat out all the time, using the extra power, which very few people will actually do (speed limits and other traffic mean that in reality full power is rarely used, even on a 2.5DT!), overall fuel consumption (brim to brim) will surely be more or less the same as before??

I do agree that if you have an extra 15bhp then when you are actually using it, you will use more fuel..... but we are talking about brim-brim mpg meausrement here, not instantaneous consumption.

HTH!

Cheers

Jerry

My dse has a plugin chip, more power, more miles in the tank what ever people think they know mine works and more than happy buying something that pays for it's self !!!!

Fitting a larger intercooler also increases the amount of fuel injected that is true. But it has not a lot to do with air flow more with air mass. The turbo pressurises the system, you can't get any more air flow than it provides, it is the thickness or mass of the air that changes. What you do get is cooler more dense air. Cooler more dense air needs more fuel to maintain the mixture ratio. So fitting a larger intercooler will give a slight power increase on it's own without any chipping. Chipping just increases the fueling to get the power boost. So a larger intercooler and chipping will give a good power boost, but either way it means injecting more fuel. You don't get owt for nowt in this world.

No not you in particular. Just amazed at the lack of knowledge and gullability of some on here.

He's being conned by the dash display which lies after the car has been chipped.

Yes Keith just so. But these people never take advice from people who know a lot more than they do. Where the fooking hell do they think their extra power and torque come from? It beggers belief that they still keep making silly claims when it has been explained so many times.

So with 136bhp I get 24 to 30mpg so there's the difference. Also how long will your gearbox last if it's auto?

i have a new gearbox fitted and engine at 190,000 miles! if i need a new angine and gearbox at 400,000 miles ill be fine with that. dont ever plan on selling it so happy enough to invest in it.

With that power you'll be lucky to even get 80K miles out of the box, mine managed less than 40K after the power went up to 166bhp (it had a total mileage of 102K) . Next time get yourself a ZF4HP24 fitted.

and change the bell housings?

and change the bell housings?

Can use the same bell housing and torque converter by all accounts, the only difference I can find is the extension piece between the end of the box and the transfer box is shorter for the ZF4HP24 to accomodate the extra length of the gearbox. I don't have the cash to buy a 24 or I would try to do it. As far as I can see the 24 is a straight swap for the 22 as long as it's from a P38:)
