Just had a nightmare drive home in my diesel. Found the fan belt had been chewed. Temp fix to get home failed and twice and it went into the red for up to 30 secs as I couldn't stop due to road conditions. Once stopped I manually turned the fan to move the coolant to try and stop any hot spots.

Firstly what should I check to see what caused the belt to fail? It was only 8 months old so surprised it failed.

Secondly have I cooked my head and caused it to warp?

Cheers in advance.

I had similar but was the idler on the tensioner. Somebody had managed to fit a narrower one which sliced the belt along one edge over time.
Iirc the new one was 25mm wide and old one 18mm which is narrower than the belt.

looks like the problem was with the mounting between the ram and the tensioner bracket. looks like the threaded side had cracked. Tried to put belt on to see what happened, levered the ram up as per Rave and it broke away. A look at the parts shows the bracket had been cracked for some time.

How do I get the bracket off as it looks like it needs a huge allen key.

A bolt head of the correct size.

10 mm bolt, 17mm head size ( I think). I welded a bolt to a bit of bar to do mine. (oooh look 1000 posts)

If you have a set of sump plug drain keys, these can be used to undo the large end cap. Had the same issue at the start of last month. Bought a non gen part for about £40.

Have had a couple of instances were the 17 mm Allen cap was so tight it undid the shaft from the front cover. Just disconnect ram and remove the lot. Allen cap is much easier to undo with large nut trapped in a vice. The early tensioner arm STC2129 was superseded by STC4608 at some stage.

Yes the end cap is looking v tight almost rounded a nut on the bolt trying to get it off. It is a standard thread I assume I.e leftie loosie.

Yep standard R/H thread can be very tight. Try giving the cap a gentle tap with tension on it.

Where is the section in Rave covering the removal of the bracket. I managed to get the end cap off but cannot get the bracket off.

Use some Plus gas on it, it should just pull off. You may have to work it loose.

Thanks once again Wammers. It feels solid at the moment so a bath of Plusgas it is.

It is supposed to swivel freely on the shaft. There is a bearing inside it. Clean shaft up and lubricate new one with HMP grease.
