couple of them cylinders look like oil burners.......... The weak spot on them was there oiling problems

I also questioned about checking the mains and rod bearing also. Wonder how many spiders and mice been in the water ways:rolleyes::lol:

what pics are you looking at ?

I had hoped my 4.4 was fine as bought from a well known and respected landy specialist as a runner all be it quite cheap for such a rare motor. TBH it probably would have run, the compression tested very well- only when I noticed one head was cracked on the outside did I dig further and found that it needed a re-bore and the cam bearings were down to the copper and several of the main and big ends were the same. Thats where it gets expensive, especially when you start putting performance bits back in the place of worn OEM, but how long would it have lasted if I had just fitted it- not that long maybe and I could have killed the unique long throw crank by just running it. Should doc re-build his first- poll please :D

After all the trouble these main studs have caused me James I completely agree!

On the upside its given you ages to finish my gearbox :p

The least that motor needs is mains and rods checked and check cylinders for out of round or taper. the least would be a hone and 5 thousands overstze rings, and new bearings bearings

I was more worried about the 40 year old ally threads and believed the hype of the sellers, tbh if I had managed to get my hands on a manual for that specific engine sooner and looked at the std torque settings I wouldnt have bothered-certainly knowing what I know now!

ones doc put up, don't look like a clean burn, in a couple of them IMO

That would probably be because that engine recycles oil into the cylinder via the carb and the fact its been sat in his garage getting covered in crap for a good couple of years.

We're going to give it a clean up and oil anyway

Not that theres enough close ups anyway and you're just making assumptions as to the condition of the engine

he has got good eyesight dont forget doc.after all he is thousands of miles away.lol.

well..i can defo see the ring marks in the bore..dont care on compression ring 1..that is to be expected (ie carbon above)
but if you look you can see compression ring 2 mark..that indicates wear..

so..while stripped down ,pop out pistons, check bearings and atleast hone/glaze bust and re ring..not that expensive..but worth the effort..

i assume you have not seen it run, let along had it on a dyno to check power etc...

so while outa car do the above..silly not too..

2nd piccy of engine..first bore on the left..not a close up yet what do you see??

pretty sure i see score marks running down the rest too..(though not 100% here)

NOT slagging you or engine off...! just its 40+ yrs old, give it some tlc while you can!
