I already told you what size it was  :p 429ci or 7.03L

Its a high displacement small block

Wont be fitting a charger at this point in time, not until I can make up a full roll cage! But I've got the bits needed to mate up an Eaton M112

Seen many old muscle cars run older engines N/A without lag. Get that cage fitted she will ne lively

Can't see how a big v8 could be laggy?

It's not going to have any lag because it's not got any boost.

It won't even really have a power band on a stock cam!

What does it redline at, something like 4500?

Ok throwing a balanced crank in there and forged rods to go upwards of 6500 would make it a little flat you could say at low end if tuned for bhp but in regular tune with normal heads it's just gonna lay chunks of power down all the time.

Crank is already balanced from what I've read, max torque is seen at 3000rpm with 480ft/lbs and max BHP is seen at 4600rpm with 340 BHP

Wont be any lag as stock, wont be any lag with charger either and a more torquey cam in place once I upgrade the rear axle. It'll get a full rebuild again with new rings and shells and maybe a +30 or 60 bore given that I can get that or a +10 kit from the states probably go +10 tbh which means if it wears again I can always go up using stock parts

Bringing a few spare pairs of halfshafts laning with me though thats for sure!

Wont need any extra power really, this monster will crawl its way up anything.......

1st Gear Ratio .... 7.05
2nd Gear Ratio .... 3.57
3rd Gear Ratio .... 1.70
4th Gear Ratio .... 1.00

Diffs 4.7:1

Transfer 1.211:1

Tyres 35"

Ratio Table

First Gear_______ High_______ 40.13:1_______ Low 110.01:1

Second Gear_______ High_______ 20.32:1_______ Low 55.71:1

Third Gear_______ High_______ 9.68:1_______ Low 26.53:1

Fourth Gear_______ High_______ 5.69:1_______ Low 15.60:1

Low range to do 10mph I'd need 10570 RPM.........so go figure. I'd calculate the torque at the wheels again but I really cba as it means I need to go dig out my formula book but it was something like 790ft/lbs at the wheels using the R380 doing 2000rpm in 4th I think so this will be a little more!

In first this is going to be pumping it out at half shaft wrecking values

have a trawl around the ashcroft site i think theyve got all the halfshaft breakage torque values up there, will let you know what youre going to need!

:eek::eek::eek: this thing is gonna be nuts! :D i want a go now  and yes I'll change the shafts if i break them :p

Ashcroft wont be able to supply me with anything good enough at a decent price!

I'm building from scratch, Dana based 4 pin power lock diff, 10 spline solid 1.75" shafts to make sure the shafts are the weak point and a cranked casing so I get a little extra rear clearance.

Front end will be free wheeling so makes no odds really. Will only engage that as a last resort because nothing says madness like RWD plus it wouldn't be a series if it was constant 4x4

Just as a comparison

R380 first gear is 3.321:1 and the Muncie box is 7.05:1  :D You better not break them :p we've only got a limited supply and I'll be needing them for stile end

Finally the thread is worth reading. No more bullpoo now people this could get interesting and technical:cool:

Keep up the good work Doc

Seriously will you please STFU! No wonder people get ****ed off with you

I for one want to see doc get this thing going as it will be epic. Now please **** off and troll somewhere else!:fighting:

yayyyyyyy.well said.:clap2::clap2::praise:

Isn't stile end beautifully resurfaced now?

No idea, will find out in feb! But hopefully the snow will make it interesting

Cool. Look forward to this

There'll be pics to follow but as a little bit of tech the head gaskets are proper ones!

Fel Pro (real good make) and as a little bit of extra info seeing as we're being techy now

Well good news guys, the gearbox is on the pallet truck and heading my way :D just looked at the tracking!

115lbs of Detroit iron! Only four gears but hell its not like I'll be needing to go that fast!

The 4th gear is a 1:1 ratio like the R380 4th and I could always get an overdrive as an aftermarket unit or fit a taller ratio 4th gear as the local guy can CNC cut any gear I want!

Indeed :)

Awesome :) you won't be needing a taller 4th gear! You'll snap the shafts before you get that high up the box :p

Anyway as for the dana based axle you have planned......you still planning on an atomic style axle or you going with a normal beam type?
Just asking as I'm thinking of the length of engine, gearbox, transfer box plus adaptor to mate the transfer. Getting back to the whole propshaft angle thing again

haha feck off :D the shafts will survive!

Yeah it'll still be cranked :) prop length will be ok as the gearbox is only 10.7" long  bellhousing is quite short too, block is smaller than the RV8 and I'll move it forward a tiny bit too!
I'll also probably drop the engine down a little if I can in order to bring it more inline

Prop angle wont be so much of a problem anyway divorced coupling will add 3-5" to the overall length or possibly less if I get smart ;) I've got an idea rattling round me head for that!

The 465 is 12" long and its the only one I can find a pic of next to a series box so here you go (remember mine is a little shorter!) And the bellhousing is about the same as a series bellhousing with V8 adaptor. The 465 pictured also has an adaptor to mate it to the series transfer. I should be able to mate the LT230 straight up using a shaft extension as the output on the SM420 is the same as the input on the LT230

Oh series first gear next to the SM465 (SM420 will be taller as its 7.05 not 6.55 as the one pictured but slightly skinnier gear)

you be surprised how much torque the lr 24 spiners can take...wouldnt want to rock crawl in them though..but for tarmac they are fine..

saw that also good job finding it

Coarse 10 spline will do me!

Wont be seeing much tarmac anyway this things gonna be more of a play toy

Snigger :D couldn't resist :D

By the look of the second pic though I don't know if I'd want to drop lower it in the chassis though. Looks like the box sticks out a fair bit underneath compared to the series box.
Also what about the sump and the front axle if you were to drop it down?

Just my thoughts of course  you've probably already thought about it :p

Box should be ok to drop a little and I'll weld in a bash plate ;)

Sump and front axle may be an issue but I can mod the sump a little as theres a bit of room spare inside! We measured up

Will see how the box and engine sit once in! I'll measure up the LT230 length and the SM420 then put it behind the RV8 just to check as the RV8 is a little longer than the 429!

Hopefully I'll end up with an 18" prop at least, thats the goal really :D
