R380 isnt amazing tho the effort involved I'd not bother. Depends what your building an everyday motor, or a comp motor or a P&P hack. I'd stick with a 101 bellhousing'd 4 speed LT95 personally for out and out strength and reliability. Axles well either go serious Dana or go Rover HD or go Rover std and portals but as with Owl try trialing.................................Sorts the men out from the boys and the boys with bling and lotsa gear and not alot else do give up pretty quick. Its quite scary that I've not competed seriously for a long time and I may have a week if I pull my finger out to drive my lil 80 wreck before the nats.

I wanted a 5 speed too and an LT95 OD is expensive :eek:


Planning on going Dana when I can afford it though :) Salisbury are expensive
 
I had drums on my 86 inch off a six cylinder never had any trouble stopping also used to tow 3 ton behind my 2B and the brakes was ok. just put a salisbury in the rear.

sals are cheep as i got more than a few for less than a £5 each add to that parts to rebuild axle ends and your onto a winner. Front end is hard but watch this space we may have a cv'd AEU5522 version on the cards using available parts and only a few special bits...................but first lets get the wreck to the nats then after a few front shafts I'll have to spend on the shafts. I have a p38 4 pin and an ashcroft CWP4.75 for the front needs building up and a sals on the back which will have a modified spider to allow for the back end to be locked or act as a spool diff. Just need time and as I'm working like a pikey outside on the 80 I need good weather. /must clear the shed so I can fit my modified bits for the series swivels to fit cv's at some point
 
series boxes are stronger than you might think I used to comp a V8 with a 2a series box, did loads of trials and comps and it never let me down.

Problem with series boxes are most of them are on their last legs before they get hammered. My bro has a brand new 1 ton box in the garage from LR somone oprdered it when he was working for them in the 90's and never collected so he got it for somthing silly like £50. still as new.
 
Late 1104 pin rear diff (same casing as a P38 but 17mm cross pins) in a D2 casing

Looks nice!! For some reason i ended up with a p38 4 pin centre for 17mm pins but somone put 15mm pins in. Ashcroft sold me a new spider/gearset. I was using them in a normal rover case. lotsa machining tho to get the bearing offset from the crownwheel flange correct but worth it in the end. I'm not rich enough to be spending loadsa money
 
Not rich enough LOL no me neither, I have to make everything myself and am always looking for the cheapest option. I got a good deal on a pair of late 110 diffs and converted the axles myself.
 
My only saving grace is built not brought!!! Somthing I learned when I was a wee kid watching modified trials with the AWDC up at arena essex. Dispite panels falling off and a car looking like a complete wreck it can still out perform more expensive motors. Its the correct choice of components and how comonents are put together to make a recepie not how shiny the components are and how bling they look.
 
With you on that one Jai, you can beat most competitors in the workshop before you even go to the event just by making sure everything works as it should.

Make sure you post up on that front axle when you get it done. will be interested to see what you sort out.

Have to agree with what you guys say about trials. Did my first CCV as a driver a few weeks back, after being a passenger for a year. Its a lot harder than it looks, but I'm sure it'll make me a better off road driver.

Yep, When I first built my V8 86" for trialling I had a mate who did trials (he had a 2A 88) and we went to this offroad site, there was a sharp turn and up a steep climb with a step up half way and no matter how many times I tried I couldn't drive up in one go but he could drive my motor up every time !!!
I tried same gear same rev's but just didn't have the knack.
When I started trialling I got me ass kicked, comps too (how could somebody in a similar motor go 2 mins faster I was giving it the death) but after many events it just came together and I was picking up trophy's.
You see plenty of newbies come and score 100 or more on the first event when the winning score is 3 or 6 and then don't come again so stick with it and don't stress it will come.
 
Very good advice that. I scored a 42 on my first event, the car's owner scored a 32 but it could have been potentially lower if he hadn't of had a senior moment and drove around a nine gate, but then continued to "clear" the section.
I helped set out some sections on Wednesday in a pretty standard S3. I drove one section pretty well, taking a shunt. It'll be interesting to see if I can repeat that in the orange trialer in my avatar..
 
Been doing the main exhaust system today, it is all tacked up but is stainless so will need taking to a friend who has a TIG, I just have the "Y" pipe to make up (but don't have any 1 3/4" pipe) and then put some mountings on.
I also started on the door frames and am making some series 1 type hinges, I will put picks up tomorrow.
