Bet your glad to be back!!!!

NOT LOL

Ps Bring back any yankie motors??a scout 2 prehaps?

Ha ha guys, for v8 guys like us its heaven! got ****loads of pics and vids of cars and car boneyards with some awesome metal and been driving a 400 bhp hemi for the last 3400 miles :D

for those in the know of hot rod magazine and roadkill on u tube i loaded up at harbour freight tools and on jerky and sweets, went out with 50kg baggage came back with 112kg lol

Cheers man, not got near it since I been back, gagging to but my assistants got women trouble atm lol

I did try and find a 33mm long reach socket for the crank nut which has the starting handle drive but no one seems to make one that has the hex all the way up inside so it will fit over said drive, its bloody annoying, ideas?

you may have to go up to 3/4 or even inch drive and get a truck socket, ones I borrowed from a mate to do a gearbox had the hex cut all the way up it

Right gents finally got the engine back out today and we got a whole hour in before another woman crisis whooo...... FFS!

I have set it up with the bits zen send me tho I had to modify the lifter one with a longer spoke as my blocks taller but I have to say this is the confusing CNUT I have was trying to avoid and even after reading zens link it basically mean fcuk all to me! Tuning

Heres the pics:

Right so in that stupid fecking article it says "Rotate the engine crank until the point for maximum lift for No 1 inlet for the particular cam

Rotate the camshaft until number one inlet valve follower is at its maximum lift. "

what? just what? so assuming I had not already got the timing chain on and thats what they are on about how the feck can I rotate a crank until the point for maximum lift for No 1 inlet for the particular cam??? if no chain on the indepeandant if chain on what can I adjust - feck all is what!!!

I am close to ebaying this for the same of this final stage as this little fiddly bastards of less than 1mm and dtis are not my thing at all and what I was trying to avoid

Right, its broken it up when i copied it but it reads in one thing:

"Rotate the engine crank until the point for maximum lift for No 1 inlet for the particular cam Rotate the camshaft until number one inlet valve follower is at its maximum lift. "

So if I rotate the crank, I am guessing the chain will need to be on if its supposed to be moving the cam? I may as well just have the chain off and turn the cam to max lift then? cranks not doing feck all if I dont know at what point to connect them? as then it say rotate the camshaft untill no1 follower at max lift- so it makes no sense does it?

going back to my old escort OHC engine days, in order to put the belt on in the correct place, i think i recall turning the crank to a particular position marked on the bottom pulley, with the correct piston at TDC and then rotating the cam to a similar position, then putting the belt on, i think i also used a dial test indicator to check the position of the cam. never worked on a v8....yet
you had to be careful with the ford engine as the piston would contact the valve if the cam and crank were out of position or the belt snapped as was quite common.
apologies if this is total bullocks

Thanks mate, yeah if it was that simple I would have been done ages ago, if you look somewhere on the last posts there is a photobucket lin with the pic of the sprocket and how rediculous the marks are, ie you could be out by several degrees.

I am sure most peeps would just run iwth how i have it now but i wanted to check it was spot on as i could end up with the same probs, shame no fecker on here seems to know :D

too much of a mix of parts to get the best from the block, its outside everyones area of expertise it seems.

what exactly are you trying to do, set up TDC and get the cam timing right? bit confused with that sentence
too

Thanks gents, The cam timing is now sorted- 5 mins on the phone with Zen and it all made sense and its now done, and whats better is that it matched the factory marks on the jp billet kit spot on which makes me feel even more reassured :)

Now on the the lifter preload (lost my kit, zen sent me the rest of his kindly but I got no instructions)

I got some 1.6 welding rod and some 0.98 welding rod and bent up the ends.

The cam says ideally 50 (thou? is it) but another bit of paper says 40 - either would be good.

On the first go with no shims the gap was massive, I could get the 1.6 rod in and move it up and down, then with the medium shims in seemed right on the 1.6 rod size except for the one at either end which was still too big.

Fitted the really fat shims and a lot of the gaps were the same size as the .98 rod but about 3 or 4 were too tight to get it in at all.

Now I know I will need to buy another shim kit which I will order tonight but how am I going to get the balance right, are you allowed to put different size shims under each pedestal or do all four have to be shimmed by the same amount? If I have no option is better if the gaps too big or too small?

Many thanks Zen, James and Mark and everyone else :)

thanks,I did spend a lot of time cleaning, and the new bits were too expensive not to be clean! :)

its gotta be done soon as my mates wedding car and I need the new gearbox jamesmartin is doing for me to be in as the other one is leaking so bad I dont think it would make the trip and Im not topping it up on the way in my best suit, plus overdrive is fecked on it too.

Just need to convince my assistant the groom that this job takes priority over his bride being a mental case :p
