Just wondering, I haven't got a replacement gearbox yet but would it be ok to drop the engine in without for now? I'm going to be ordering a gearbox in the next week or so then replacing the input gear on the disco transfer box I've got

Yes, I was in the same situation when I did mine.
I just had to prop the back of the engine up. (Mounts in middle so engine will fall back if not)
But I had mine like that for a good couple of weeks as I also stripped the engine down to do the belts and all the gaskets while it was like that.

Thanks, I still need to do the timing belt etc and finish building it up, at least it'll be at an easier working height on the chassis.

Yep, Exactly why I did it :)
I just stuck a piece of box section under the bell housing.
Would have just used a jack but I was always moving the chassis in and out the garage so this worked better.

Ok, I'll keep the thread updated with where I'm up to. How many rebuilds have you done by the way Aaron?
 
Nice, this is my first and I've done very little with landrovers other than keeping it running before the rebuild so this is all new experience for me.

Most stuff on lr's isn't difficult.
Don't get me wrong I worked in a garage as an apprentice for a couple of years. But never worked on lr's
Since leaving I've probably learnt more just by having a go.
So anything landrover related I've taught myself.
Not just mechanical stuff, But painting, Welding etc...
But as I say they're simple things really and theirs lots of info on here if you do get stuck.

Engines in!!! I had 20 mins so I thought I'd drop it in, now to just get all the ancillaries cleaned up and fitted. Quick question, how tight do I go with the engine mounts? I've given them a good nip with a spanner so should I go any tighter?

Tight enough is good enough, its not like it going to drop out!
 
Been flat out over the last week straw carting, patio building and general farm work so I've not got much done. I though I might have a look at the wiring loom just to weigh up what I need to do when building a new one. After untangling the mess I was left with some issues.

Firstly I can't remember where any of the relays went though I'm sure I can sort that out later, secondly there has been a few bodges including the stereo wiring which was connected to a positive supple using twin core housing wire lol. My final issue is the immobiliser that's fitted. I have no idea how it works and I would like to remove it and fit it into my new loom. The photo below shows the details of it, does anyone have any ideas?

Its the same immobiliser I've got but not fitted yet. There should be a little metal pad & LED fitted somewhere on the dash. There are also two little tear shaped fobs that hang off your key ring. You touch these against the metal / LED pad before putting the key in the ignition and turning. Send me a PM with your email address & I'll send you a pdf file of the fitting instructions I got from the supplier

engine loom on order
but cannot face ordering the main loom yet

I am just going to put some more tape around mine as it isn't too bad. I'm not putting it back through the chassis though, will run it though some trunking along the chassis.

Yeah it is a bit daunting but id rather not fork out any more for stuff i could sort myself. Im going for a better than new loom using various waterproof connectors and incorporating the td5 dash binnical and correct stereo wiring. Hopefully the engine and chassis looms wont be as bad and ill be able to add all the little bits aswell whilst im at it like rear lighting etc

How desperate are you for a new loom? If i have enough people interested ill get on with it sooner rather than later then i can decide whether its worth doing any more. Bear in mind my looms probably wont be the same quality as those from auto sparks.
 
Well, my plans for sorting out a new loom have come to an abrupt end. In my haste and arrogance I never labeled any of the cables so now I have to decipher which bit goes where. On top of that previous bodgings and a less than helpful Haynes wiring diagram I'm really struggling

i have the new chassis loom here mate if you needs pics of it
I also have the original loom that I marked up when i removed if you need that for a ref pm me and we can sort something mate
