Hiya guys
I'm in the process of looks for a new landy as my 90 200tdi isn't big enough with 4 new edition, so it's going to be either a range rover v8 or a disco 300tdi but in not sure yet will the novelty of a v8 wear off I've got up to 5k to spend but would like change for maintenance and need to be built for off road or cheap enough to be able to adapt it for off road

Might want to stay away from the Disco then!

If you get a P38 for £2000 you'll need at least a grand for fixing it up, a grand or so for getting it ready for off-roading (air-lockers, nobblies etc) and then anything left will be snapped up by the unexpected faults you missed the first time round.

Oh right like that are they I know p38 have the common know faults like suspension (which I'd take out anyway and fit some 2 inch terrafirma or some something like like) and over heating for exampl,e as for the v8 I'm not sure which one to go for the 2.5 is under power from what I've been reading

Right v8 it is then are the lpg tanks expensive to service and repair

If you get a P38 it will go wrong and if you don't like a bit of spannering it will drain your pocket faster than any drug addiction. Second-hand parts are cheap enough and easy enough to fit with the help on here.

The usual second-hand car advice like go for a top of the range model, low mileage, service history and walk away at once if anything seems at all odd. Helps if someone with diagnostics can go along and read any codes for you. If you want to keep a P38 then a Nanocom is recommended but on a V8 you might get away with an ODB2 reader and the EAS unlock suite.

There's a way of checking the blocks on the V8 but I cannot remember what it is. Hopefully someone more familiar with the V8 will be along shortly to advise.

Usual things that are wrong will be:

EAS system somewhere, usually worn bags / compressor.
RF receiver / door locks burnt out.
Overheating issues on the V8. This is a deal-breaker. Walk away if anything about the cooling system seems a bit suspect.
Head gasket on the V8 will probably give out after 110k miles.
Infamous heater o-rings causing a damp driver's carpet. Cheap fix but a bit fiddly.
HEVAC blend motors.

The Nanocom is worth it. small problems can be fixed instantly and larger ones can be diagnosed so you dont wast hours faffing about

There are only 2 "budget" versions that talk to 90% of the systems and that is the Nanocom or the Hawkeye. I know of people that bought the Hawkeye and then went and bought a Nanocom afterwards. Guess there was a reason.
