Bought a Discovery 300 TDI a month ago, it was afraid of hills, it's fitted with an autobox, anyway I was told the engine had been rebuilt, towed the caravan the other day started to overheat, in less than 10 miles!! nursed it to my destination, first hill on the way home killed it. Moan over.:mad:

Sounds like a similar story to mine. Hopefully its just a blocked rad and you havn,t damaged the engine. Mine has been fine since the re-build and new rad. Try locking in 3rd or even 2nd manualy if its a big hill ,it does help.I came back from north Wales on the A55 last month and when I hit that huge hill I was down to 35mph in 2nd flat out !.

It was Rhuallt in North Wales I was avoiding, but even when not towing I was down to about 40 mph on the same hill. No the engine has gone I think, the vehicle itself looked good, I was told the engine had been re-built I doubt this now, I recovered the caravan with my 1980 Rnge Rover, what a differance, as I was getting near Holyhead she could smell the sea air.;)

If the body work is sound it might be worth getting a second hand engine for maybe £300 ? Should be plenty about with bad rot Mot failures.

What makes you think the engine "has gone"? It could just need a new rad, new filters, change oil, clean the intercooler, change axle and gear box oils...it can make a big difference

The engine almost seized up but was stopped in time, I tried starting it a short while ago and it just turns over and won't start. If I was to go down the new engine route, I'd get a new g/b also as I can't say I like an auto 300 TDI.

Andy. :)
