Salisbury axle

Am looking at one for the back, not sure what i'd expect to pay either but looks reasonable - just whether it would be an easy swap and not need to get lots of extra bits?

needs a shorter prop - Sailsberry has a longer diff "nose".
bottom spring seats will be too big, cos 110 springs are larger diameter.
A frame mount should be OK
donno bout trailing arm mounts.

hmm...tis very tempting, would go particularly nicely with a detroit i think! Is it right that these things are virtually indestructible (where's the good Cap'n Chaos when you need him for testing??)!!

Thats what I have done.

I used a L reg Range Rover 200 TDI 5speed manual front Propshaft as we had a Rangie in for breaking a at the time. After careful measurement it was perfect. Luck was on my side. (I had my prop ready in one hand hacksaw in the other ready to be cut down when I spotted th lonely propshaft laying against the wall)

Range Rover front TDI Propshaft,
New 90 rear spring locators or your old spring locators,

Remember*

A Salisbury axle is far superior to its rover counter part far far stronger 4 pin center and heavy duty shafts and 24 spline throughout. Larger brakes mean that its possible to lock up the rear before the front but with the ammount of kit (crap) I carry thats no problem. However. The axle is heavy and I do mean heavy! you will also loose about an Inch of ground clearance beneath the diff bango. People say they have ground the diff away to give more slightly more clearance than a rover diff but I don't like that idea. You could probably loose some as the casing is an inch thick all around the bango but I left mine alone. Also the pinion seal isn't a quick swapout like a rover unit it requires a special tool as the nut is set to a specific setting for the pinion bearing preload.

As for fitting a Detroit Urmm,

Drive one first is my suggestion its a whole new way of driving thats for sure nothing like it locking up on you mid bend! I can tell you!

You will need a spreader to do it properly. People on the net say they got theirs out with leavers trust me if the bearings are preloaded correctly be you wont get them out if somone else did then their bearing preload is naffed and good luck to them!

Also make sure you use the same braking system as you already have otherwise you may end up having to change master cylinders and servos dependant on what you fit.

For any help or whatever don't be afraid to ask.

Jai

I got my axle from ebay for £20 and my Detroit from Ebay for £122 so I dont think i did too bad. Imjust happy that its indestructable! Jai

Thanks, that's very useful info. The axle is up at auction but has a BIN at £75, guess it's worth bidding on rather than BIN it at that price then?

Depends I was willing to go up to £80 as Mine was drum braked if it was disk braked then mabe 120 I suppose But i am a tight ass!

hmmm...and i guess technically i would need to notify DVLA about it as it's a mod for which points count against it (wouldn't want BoB on my back!) wouldn't i???

So many great things to buy why do you want a salisbury axle, bit of an overkill for our use isnt it oddi, or are you up to something in secret:D :D :D

Ha! Yeah, i guess, all depends what it goes for! Thought it would be a good starting point for fitting a detroit though seeing as they turn normal axles into cream cheese within 3 miles!

What makes yer say that Oddie?

I heard that people have been known to have big problems with normal axles and detroits because they can put them under immense strain and bits tend to pop out a la cap'n chaos, i figured that if i was going to fit a detroit it would be easier to do it on a new axle, not on the car, coz it might take a while with me engineering skills (like weeks!) and i thought if i was going to get a new axle, might as well make it a really strong one! (cost depending!)
