Hi all, Looking for a little advice on replaceing my S3 footwells. Photos attached are mine at the moment, Just wondering what the best course of action is in regards to replacing them is and were to start. It will be my first time welding, I have a arc (for some chassies work) and have just bought a clarke pro90 mig welder, What gauge wire would i need for them. I was hoping that they would just bolt in like every thing else but NOOOOOOO.

think it's about 1.5mm but that's just been dredged up from the darkest recesses of me addled brain so could be wrong. But ya can buy replacement footwells if ya wanna save ya self some aggro.

I was planning to buy some replacements because my diy skills are well crap. Anything for a easy life. I have a old wheel barrow to do some test welding on :) Was hoping Buster had done a walk through :D to help with the steps.

I made meself up a nice set off 1/4" Stainless steel bolt in footwells, Took me about half a day and cost around a tenner to make, They even passed the MOT as bolt in sections.

I'll take some pics for ya's tommorrow.
 
good luck with the welding, this is my opinion, had i been put into the situation of doing this project i would remove the bulk head and take it from there, you would have better vision on what needs welding and a better rapair job all round, plus the safety of your self, i was grinding underneath a vehicle and some tosser walked passed and tripped over the cable i have now got a v shape scar on my chest just below the left tit where the grinder landed, a little bit of work removing the bulk head is well worth the finished job of the welding good luck with it,

Not sure about removing the bulk head, I have no garage to do it in. So it will all have to be done on the drive, were now in September and in the UK so not looking forward to doing it full stop never mind the extra work with the full bulk head. Definatly a option i will consider though. I really need to see some one that has done it, and hopefully they can point me through it. :( In some respects i am wishing i never got her back, but have wanted another landrover for ages and they always need work. So i suppose i may aswell just soldier on with her for the sentimental value of her within the family.

The repair footwells usually need a little bit of trimming to get them to fit. Clamp them into position while you tack it with your MIG, then when you're happy with the position, weld round the entire join.
MIG isn't hard (and if you have done stick-welding you should be fine), but it's worth practising before you attack the Landy.

Thanks for the advise. I suppose its hard to know were and how to chop out the old ones with out having the replacements at hand. I have never done welding before. I am going to try and weld bits of my old wheel barrow first. Also my diy skills are like 2 of of 10 so i guess i have a task on my hands. I have started taking the head lights out and the side/indecator lights out today.

I am just checking through the net for a walk through of how to remove the wings safely.
 
I found using one of those auto darkening welding helmets makes so much difference when welding, you can actually see what your doing instead of stabbing in the dark...

Friend got his for £20 off fleebay, seems to work ok

Yes, looking at getting one of them. I have a normal blacked out one.
 
Still looking for some sort of walk through, Project on hold till better weather. Still got no practice welding :( would not know were to start on this. Doin my head in :Cry:
