East Morocco

Hiya
Were camping in Southern Spain for the winter with our 110 Puma, poping over to Morocco for a couple of weeks.
Ship Almeria / Melilla then to Oujda and Algerian border down to Figuig then Rissani and the Erg Chebbi, after a couple of weeks or so back the same way to Melilla / Almaria.
Not wanting the Atlantic weather fronts or the Atlas snow in december.
Anyone with past experience down the Algerian / Morocco border, wild camping no probs but any info would be of interest.

Do you plan on going through the Morocco/Algerian border ? It's been closed since 1994, and despite rumours earlier this year that it was going to open, it's still closed. Check out the Hubb forum, they are quite active in that area, and may have some more recent information.

Just had a look on the map, I take it you mean you are driving along the border.... Well I've never been that far east, don't think may people have... I went a little bit east, with the drug lords that kidnapped and robbed me... But I think even they would be scared to go all the way east... It's where pretty much all of Europe's Hashish is grown, and there are some scary characters out that way....

So I would do some serious home work before going that way...

If you ever end up in Bab Berred, Look out for this dude, he is the local Kingpin...




And if this dude offers you tea, drink it at you peril....

You will find many places to wild camp in the east. Just keep off the beaten track a bit to discourage visits from kids/traders. There are plenty of places in erg chebbi that will let you camp on their ground for about a fiver and use the facilities to clean up etc.

Just hauled out my Morocco overland book, looks like you are to the east of the drug growing areas. I had mistakenly thought it went all the way to the border..

It might be worth getting Chris Scott's Morocco overland book, because although the route from Melilla to Oujda isn't covered in the book, presumably because it's just standard road, when you get near to Figuig you start having options of Desert Highway or Scenic Routes.

Also Chris Scott is very active on the Hubb forum, so if you post a question there you may get an updated viewpoint...

Thanks fellas for the help and advice, me and the mrs have been wintering near Almeria from oct till march for the last 9 years, hence the Almeria / Melilla crossing.
This winter has so far been a lot of rain here in Southern Spain so a bit of mucking about east and south of the Atlas is on the agenda.
