Hello All

For reasons unfathomable to my wife, and actually to myself as well, I've decided to join an off-roading session with a local club in Feb. I'll take the front skirt off, but otherwise she will go as is. I am reasonably certain that I will break something or get stuck, but a mate will come along in his motor so if it gets really bad I can always tow it somewhere out of sight and torch it. Only joking there of course, I'll call the AA actually.

Is anyone here generous enough to offer some tips? I will be reading alot in the next 2 weeks, but as it's my first serious off-road (done some fields and a couple of muddy tracks) I'm going to be taking it easy. While I want to have some fun and maybe crap myself a bit, my overall philosophy will be "if it looks like I might roll it, I won't bother".

There's quite a few impressive videos on U-T showing stock P38s coping with some quite tricky terrain. I have fitted a HD spring kit with a 2" lift, and running General Tyre AT Grabber 2s, so I think I should be okay.

Regarding winches, there is a real scarcity of P38 winches, so I think I will order a decent quality manual winch to throw in the boot. Can anyone advise on an electric winch that I'm missed, or recommend a good rachet and lash?

Thanks in advance
Jock

I personally think the main benefit of a P38 offroad capability is the air suspension, coil kits don't react as well to aid traction and if you bottom out with coil springs, you are stuck and will need your mate or winch, but with the air suspension the computers know when the car is grounded and raise the suspension beyond all manual settings to raise the body off the ground and you simply drive away!!

just get a couple of decent strops and shackles and make sure you have solid recovery points front and rear.

I keep a 1.5 tonne chain block and some climbing rope in the boot for recovery. Very effective but a bit dicey when you're on your own. Had to use it twice last week, through my own stupidity not any failing of the P38 :) :) Although 4 wheel TC might have helped.

I doubt you missed anything, cause there really isn't much to find. No-one makes an off the shelf winch mount for the P38:mad:. Although there was one as a factory option they're rarer than hens teeth:eek:. Presumably no-one envisaged using their shiney new Rangie for mucky things like that:D

There are a couple of sites with quite detailed descriptions of custom mounts people have knocked up for themselves, but unless you've got the kit and the skills to copy one properly it's not the kind of thing you wanna lash together and then have let go at a critical moment.....

As red sed, recovery points are a must other wise all the winches and shackles in the world wont help cos ya aint got nothing to tie em to.A winch as dragon sed are as rara as rocking horse ****.The yanks have some more gear available to them but you'd struggle to find any one to ship it.A tirfor winch will pull in any direction and can be rented for the weekend if ya dont wanna buy em

If you have any luck with em, and could knock up a jig to turn out more I reckon a few people would be interested.

Yup, I'd be interested in em.

I've been idly looking for a factory P38 winch bumper for a while. Not found one at any price. Surely someone could remanufacture them?
Trouble is not many people believe the P38 is ever used off road so they probably think there's no market for them - an opinion reinforced by most of the magazines too.

Thanks for the tips guys. The only option I found for a winch bumper was this American crew (winch bumper) but don't know if they export, and it's a pretty radical mod.

Thanks for the advice on the recovery points. I don't have welding capability, but will have a good look round the front and back for some bolt-on options. Otherwise I'm left with just the towing eye...

Think I'll need to get the running boards off as well. Not difficult, but I doubt those bolts have turned in 10 years.

A lad i went laning with got a jate ring on the front by cutting the front valance slightly, but he necver got stuck so we didnt test it!

He attached a jate ring through the chassis rail on the Drivers side.
Here it is
