I noticed my heat shield was looking a little dodgy to say the least.....
After reading egor8384's post, and getting very worried, I was prompted to have a good look.

On the passenger side, slightly rear of tha cat the shield was hanging down on the exhaust and there were/are signs of burning. Blackening/darkening of the fibrepadding. The clips holding it up were still there, just the holes the clips go through were no longer doing the job.

I managed to tie it all up tight with a length of strong solid metal core from a cable wrapped around the 2 clips/screws either side. That seems to be holding it up fine. No other areas are touching the exhaust from what I can see.

My worry is the thin metal layer (seems no more than tin foil) has simply disappeared in areas where the most heat has been. This looks less than safe.

Is there a recommended replacement for this stuff? What to do?

Cheers all in advance.

I managed to stick mine back up after it dropped into the front prop with some big flat washers and some nuts that screwed onto where the stupid clips go. I think they were M6.

Great idea. Also this stuff is only £5 for a small section. If I replace the part near the cats then I should be ok. Mine has not fallen on the cats, just the foil has gone in a strip. Not sure if that is a concern or not, but for a fiver it may be worth replacing just that section, if it can be done securely.....

The part that fell (that I originally mentioned) is back up now, that also needs changing I think to be safe.

Thanks

If i get another thats first thing im going to do. Also saw a thread on disco section regarding earthing problem nearly causing fire so may be worth checkinh them aswell

I would be gutted to go through what you did, thank god you were ok.
It made me remember I was going to check the state of them, glad I did.

I am going to Kent in 2 weeks, it will be it's first longish journey in 6 months, fingers crossed all is ok...... Not sure I will have time to change the heat shield in time though :-S maybe I should make sure, even though I know it is not touching the exhaust......

When i popped the hood it was the top edge i saw on fire.that was good couple inches above the cat.But from amount of flame compaired to smoke there was more fire than i could see. If your down my end of Kent give me shout. O half mile before junction 11 on m20 coastbound can still see burnt patch on hard sholder
Failing that Plumb center do a product called Cool Gel. It like a spray on burn mat.

At last, I have done it.

I checked under yesterday when I was planning an oil change in the auto box. What I found was the heat shields were again falling onto the cats and it had signs of burning, or at least toasting.

So I decided to just do something more permanent about it.

I got some zinc coated M6 nuts and washers and 2 sections of aluminium sheet. A section of thick card and and pen /suitable tools.

First I made a template with the card and marked the shape and bends/folds. Card is handy for the studding holes as you can just push and the stud pops through the card.

Left and right shields are different due to the prop and transmission etc.

Fingers crossed that this will do the job.:)
