Don't buy an aftermarket amplifier. An OE unit will last a long time. You can buy a cable extension kit to remotely mount it on the inner wing to get it away from the engine heat. I think Discos had these remotely mounted from the factory.
If you prove that the ignition module is at fault then depending on the engine you have will need to replace it, maybe one as shown below.

Local independent Land Rover repair mechanic said the plates in gearbox are burnt, he can replace the gearbox and have it up and running for a reasonable cost so I think this is the way I’m going to go.

I'd say you'll be putting a gearbox in it, it seems to be the weakest link on the early cars and as BiB has suggested, a couple of grand seems to be about the sum to do it properly.
