The valves would bend on impact so would not cause damage. Normally if a belt/chain goes it would mark a few pistons not all of them Have you had any head problems?

Most cars run the speedo off the gearbox so that is why I assumed that with the L322. In that case changing the differential ratio does affect the speedo. Maybe you didn't know that, but you can look at the attached image for that fact. But...
