Your thoughts on the 2.5td 19j engine??

ive just rebuilt a 19j and have done a small modification to it , it will now start from cold about 4 or 5 turns without heat and once run it will then start every bit as good as 200 tdi it fires instantly once slightly warm its quieter and smoother running than it was and from the way it quickly revs im quite sure it will be a big improvement on that gutless M51 thats in my S2 at the moment . i recon the 19j will have far more bottom end torque than that ****y BMW pile of ****e . i will add a bit more when its in and running
 
im quite happy with the TD ive rebuilt it sounds well , ive got some monark inj nozzles to put in it too these worked well on the BMW made it quieter so im going to try them in the TD too i ll add more once its in and running .
 
got a 2.5 td and love the thing. It makes me feel like I am really driving a defender. It is however, extremely smokey and that concerns me. Any suggestions to fix the smoke at startup? the cloud of smoke is usually white and makes the engine run really rough until it gets to temperature.
 
Unburnt fuel or steam
Ive ran a 19j for ten years now, its been to Greece twice and was totally reliable, its done well over 250k, parts are cheap, its easy to work on, anyone who says they are a bad engine really is talking out of their arse.
 
Nobber, thanks for the reply. Those are really great news. I am in the process of doing the timing belt. Any tips to ensure that the diesel pump is correctly timed?

have you got crank pin and pump pin,you align dot on pump at not f mark if it has both and you need to look direct at marks ie through rad not from above
 
I just found this rather old article on here, very interesting as I am considering an "upgrade" to the 19J!
I currently have the 2.5NA which has a very leaky fuel rack. It's also very slow, I can barely get 60mph on the flat and I drop to 40mph on even slight hills. I do on the other hand get 29mpg, or at least that's what I got before the fuel rack went!
My mechanic said it's not worth replacing the fuel rack and recommended replacing the 2.5NA with a 200Tdi to get a lot more power.
I really wanted to keep the old gearbox as it's really in good condition, also I wanted to try to keep the Landy more original so he suggested going for a 19j which he has in his workshop. The 19j will drop right into the 2.5NA mounts and connect up to the old LT gearbox no problems.
If his 19J doens't work out he said he won't charge me and we'll just look at fitting a 200Tdi.
Yes, I know it's probably more practical to go straight to a 200Tdi but I like to be different and I quite like the old layout of the LT gearbox.
The 19J has god a PAS pump, I don't have PAS at the moment so my 110 HiCap is a bit of a struggle to steer!
I just wondered what peoples opinions are on this?
 
Not driven a 19J which is the Turbo version of the 2.5NA ?
Anyhow, 200Tdi i do have and in it's current state is perfect and gets up to 60mph no trouble and rarely needs shifting down to go up hills and gets me 30mpg all day long.
 
19j wasnt one of lrs most reliable they suffer bore wear head cracking and piston cracking due to the turbo,200tdi defender spec is a straight fit like the turbo diesel and is a much better engine ,though your likely to find a disco lump much easier and they take a little more fettling

They dont just drop in, there is a whole lot more to it than that. Rad, air box to name a few.

Might be worth having a look at the valve guide seals.
 
White smoke is unburnt fuel, weak battery, worn glow plugs, poor electrical system needing a service, old fuel filter, worn injectors, fault in fuel system, low compression, does it turn over good and fast when starting? When were the glow plugs last changed?

I thought the rad was the same on the 2.5 Turbo? I think my mechanic meant the 2.5 TD dropped in relatively easily compared to trying to get a 200Tdi in there.
The 2.5TD is not fitted to a vehicle but it's believed to be in working condition. He's said if it's a no go he won't charge me, which is nice :)
If it runs well then I'd get the cam belt changed no matter what - I've had a cam belt break before so very cautious there!
Is it worth changing the glow plugs and injectors anyway? I don't think those parts are particularly expensive.

I have the 19j engine in my 90 - it’s probably a bit quicker than what you are describing.... but not by much, although I don’t rev mine too much just in case it rattles it’s self to bits...29mpg err no !

In all seriousness I’ve not had it that long - it’s done over 130000 miles and its sweeet !!
