Young insurance

Hi all,
Since I’ve gotten back into my Lannys, my son has started to look for one. He’s always wanted one as he used to help my with my old series 3. He was looking at getting a td4 freelander but we can’t find anyone who will even look at insurance as he has only passed his test this summer, he’s currently paying just over £4500 a year for a 2004 cleo and hating it.

That’s harsh. Sorry can’t help but do appreciate it’s hard on youngsters theses days.
Does he have one of them “black boxes”? they help a bit.
I have no real words of wisdom to help.
Maybe an older defender might change the cost, but maybe reliability might suffer.

First year after a driving test is silly money. So unfortunately you're stuck with group 1 or 2 vehicles, if silly insurance prices are to be avoided.

A Freelander is well out of reach of a first year driver, so some more experience is needed in a boring and tiny engined car first.

My daughter is currently learning to drive in a 1.4 Citroen C3, however once she passes her test, the C3 will make way for a 999cc C1 instead.

My series let me build a cheap NCB since admiral gave me a massive classic car discount. Might be worth looking at them.

Other than that a black box will help. It’s cut my gfs insurance by a couple hundred at least.

Wow, that cost of insurance is terrible for youngsters today. It make's me realise I shouldn't begrudge paying the comparatively minor amount I get charged for insurance.

Hopefully he can build up some NCB in the coming years and in the meantime maybe his old man can purchase him a nice little project vehicle to maintain his interest.

We looked at the black boxes, but he works early’s and lates which he would get penalised for and he’s also in the St Johns so he can be out late with that as well. It’s an absolute nightmare. He even called the NFU for a quote, but they said we didn’t live in a rural area. We live next door to a farm and our fence is to boundary to a country estate.

Yes, that is sort of the plan, he’s helping me with my 90, I’m keeping an eye out for a reasonable series project, because I thought about classic insurance. He really wanted something to be safe in the winter as he works 15 miles away, and is out at silly hours. So we keep trying.

Old series on a classic policy will be his cheapest bet or failing that get on a moped for a year and make sure that the first year is transferable to a car policy, mine was but that was a long time ago now

Yes and it is also one of the main reasons why youngsters are more likely to end up driving without insurance.

Yes that is what we have said, that it is no wonder there are so many none insured cars on the road.

Admiral split multicar cover? It's taken me down to £100/mo, but to get there we had to ring them to see what their beef was - then they backed down.

Might be considerably harder for a recent pass however

My Disco is £101+pence for the year an my pug 206 1.6 hot hatch is £130 a year, both fully comp.

old series are cheap to insure for youngsters, afaik you can't have a classic policy if you are under 25 but classic policies don't accrue ncd either, my daughter had our series 3 for £800 via af when she passed her test, it came down to £650 this year but she has swapped to a cr-v for £1k with a black box, without a black box cheapest was £3k

That’s good, will have to have a look, he’s paying £350 ish a month at mo on cleo

Are you TPFT SDP or fully comp SDP?

blimey that’s good, my D3 is £400 per year , fully comp, inc full breakdown cover , key cover , legal , etc

D3 is insurance group 33, my old TD4 was group 21

TPFT, I'm just hoping that the fact I've had no points, no cameras and no crashes reflects well for me at renewal

Fully Comp is cheaper, don't ask why, but it is, my pug would be £400 TPFT and it's £130 fully comp on a 10,000 mile limit.

D1 is on a classic policy with 5,000 ,mile limit, love the NFU

D1 is group 21 so lower than your D3
