So basically a couple of O rings, pump and fluid?
May get another belt too while its apart.

No probs mate, it's a pleasure to be able to help.
The whole fluid circuit of the pas equates to approx 3.3ltrs, but loads of it will remain untouched in the steering box, so if I were you I would just get a litre or 2.

ive just done mine as it whined and groaned , 2 litre of fluid, if you change it, a litre for topping up if you don't,

Had another good look this morning and the longer of the two rubber hoses is definitely rubbing on the edge of the sump as there is a shiny patch on the metal behind it.
Couldn't see if that is where the fluid is coming from but more fluid has leaked (drove about 5 miles) since I cleaned the area up yesterday.
Is the hose easy to replace and could someone let me know which part it is - could it be 8 in the diagram you kindly sent me Dave?
If it is the hose leaking but the pump has to come out anyway to change it I might as well buy a new pump too.

Hi Nick, if you get underneath the car whilst the engine is running, take some kitchen towel with you so you can clean the pipe where it's been rubbing on the sump (like mine was!!) to check if it's leaking.
I put a corrugated sleeve around mine as it wasn't yet leaking and I wanted to protect it.
Part no. 8 is the hose in question.

Thanks Dave,
After a couple of pints lunch time I decided to have another look at this and managed to get my arm down from the top and feel the pipe.
There definitely feels like there is a hole in it so is it a big job?
I also saw a drip of fluid from it before I felt it.
Part number for pipe would also be gratefully received:clap2:

Hi Nick, it's not a big job at all. Disconnect one end from the reservoir and the other end from the pump itself.
You might need to remove the black corrugated inlet air pipe that goes to the turbo to give working room.

Possible that the hoses have worn through in a small spot and are draining ...
Can rub on anything as the engine vibration makes it wobble ...

The drivers side is where the steering box lives, but the area of the pipe where it wears against the sump seam is only left of centre, so maybe it's leaking from there but collecting next to the RF wheel?
I still reckon it's the pipe we've been speaking about because the reservoir has emptied without the engine turning, therefore no pressure in the system, just gravity drain.
Also, on my car at least, this hose with it's rubber U-shape is the lowest part of the whole pas circuit.

Only dumped the fluid after I gave the pipe a good feel and turned it so I could see what looks to be a hole.
Maybe before I disturbed it it was sort of sealing itself against the sump or I just made it bigger by twisting the pipe.
There was a thick collar round the pipe which I guess was intended to stop it chafing but that was a good couple of inches away from where I guess it should have been and just fell apart when I tried to slide it up to cover the hole.
Hopefully it is the pipe and I haven't buggered anything else up by driving it.
I struggled to get it up on the kerb without the power steering and there is no way you could drive it.
Pipe is on its way so we will see what happens.

Yes it is fixed but it wasn't as easy as on a TDi 300.
I first found a 2nd hand pump for peanuts money and put that on. Got back powered steering but wouldn't bleed correctly. At the same I noticed the water pump (driven off the back of the pas pump) appeared to be leaking, so ordered a new one.
Now to get the water pump off is a game and a half. I eventually opted for the 'remove pump support assembly' method, which requires replacement of a O'-ring as well. Trouble is I had to take other stuff off as well to get at all the bolts :mad2:.
Anyway, put new pump in, put new pas pump in, put everything back together and all is well.
Just waiting for a set of new glow plugs because currently she smokes like a smokey thing, for the first couple of minutes in these colder mornings.
How-hum never get bored with a Landy eh?
Contrôle Technique (French MOT) on Thurs morning - wish me luck eh?

The French Contrôle Technique is basically the same idea as an MOT but differs in some important areas:
1. CT inspections are only ever done by independent registered CT centres, so they have no axe to grind in terms of getting garage work;
2. They are very highly equipped with techy stuff for doing all sorts of tests.
Generally speaking much like MOT inspectors the CT guys apply a reasonable level of common sense, so here's hoping she'll pass.
