Yet another strange noise...

Vehicle is a Disco 2 TD5.

Went out Saturday morning and after about a mile got this whining noise which is coming from under the bonnet, slightly engine speed affected but much louder when you turn the steering in either direction. Quite loud when going round a roundabout.

When stationary you can just hear it with the engine running but it gets louder if you turn the steering.

Stopped after about 10 miles and it didn't return for the remaining 20 or so miles of the journey.

Went out again Sunday and same noise, drove about 3 miles and parked for 20 mins. Started up again and the noise had gone and didn't return in the remaining 3 miles to home.

Went to work this morning and again the noise started after about a mile, stopped for a paper after a couple of miles for about 5 mins and when I started again noise was gone and didn't return for the remaining 2 miles to work.

Probably not relevant but on my way home Friday I was a bit enthusiastic driving through a local ford which was only about 6 inches deep but I did hit it at speed and I'm sure water would have gone up into the engine bay.

Any suggestions appreciated.

I would say absolutely relevant !!!!!! You got water onto the pulleys and it took a while to get rid of it.

I would be inclined to replace the existing belt and clean the pulleys.
 
Thanks all for the replies.

Understand could be the pump but not a moan more a "Weeeeee" sort of noise and steering light as a feather and not lumpy even when stationary.
 
This is driving me potty now.

Couldn't go the long way to work this morning due to the weather and it made the noise (albeit quieter) the whole 3 mile journey.

Popped out an hour later and no noise.

Went home for lunch, noise is back so I went straight round to the local garage who did the last service for me.

Parked up, switched engine off and went to see the mechanic.

Less than 3 mins later he came out to listen to it, he had me cycle the steering lock to lock about 20 times and guess what - no noise at all.

He then asked me to hold it briefly on full lock both ways a couple of times and apart from the very faint noise it has always made on full lock (the same as any other car) - nothing.

He did wonder if it was a temperature issue as it has only really made it since the weather has been colder which makes me wonder whether it has the proper cold weather fluid in it.

Anyway drove home tonight and noise is back.:(

I did check the fluid level this morning and it is right on the minimum mark but would it be that sensitive to fluid level?

It might be that your fan belt is old or worn/stretched so why not fit a new one? They are only about a tenner.

Is it a serpentine belt (TD5) and is it easy to do?

Yes it is. You'll need a 15mm socket on a long breaker bar to work the tensioner and it's MUCH easier to do if you remove the viscous fan. To do that you'll need a 36mm fan spanner.

MIne makes a whining noise when it feel like it, usually when turning right. I'm sure its a worn heater fan bearing.

Have you tried switching off the heater when the noise is present??
 
Oh well, mystery solved. Went to work Wednesday and whine didn't go away, checked fluid level and well below minimum so I have a leak.

Had already ordered some new LR fluid so topped up to max again Thursday morning, slight whine for a couple of miles and then gone.

Still the same today although fluid has dropped slightly.

Guessing in for a new pump or steering box or both.

Are these diy jobs?

Hi Yorkie, I've just done a new pas pump on my TD5 and it's not a bad job to do, but before you spend any money on the pump, check the pipes going to and from it, particularly the long U-shaped one that can rub against the engine sump flange.

Check it from underneath.

A common place for a leak is the lower seal on your steering box,you can buy a seal repair kit ,sometimes works sometimes don't ,messy job to do,
 
Cheers guys, if it is the box seal then I guess the box has to come out?

If so would be easier just to buy a new box.

Will have a look today to see if I can find the leak.

I have bought a tube of the Wynns stuff but reluctant to try it in case it buggers something else up.
 
Cheers, now had a good look and there was a lot of PAS fluid lying under the pump on the various bits down there,felt round the connection but that was dry so guessing it will be the pump itself?

If it is what do I need to buy besides the pump and some more very expensive LR fluid?
