xyz switch testing?

I have a discovery2 TD5, After driving in D a couple of yards the s&m light flashes and goes into limp home mode. I had it diagnosed and they said it was the xyz switch. I have took it off and tried to clean it but when put back on i got my brother to sit in the vehical and i turned the switch shaft and only can get Park and Drive which flashes on thee gear selector, Should i be to get neutral and the other gears by turning the cog?

was it diagnosed with a tester?... you need to align the switch properly, and for that a special tool is needed(which can be imrovised with handiness and knowledge).. see this too http://www.handyhowie.co.uk/handyhowie/Disco_Gear_Selector_Switch.html

or you could just move it either way till gear indicator in cab matches actual position selected

The garage didnt give me the codes but the have said on the reciept fault traced to xy switch, I can get D and P but if i put it in neutral or 123 i cant get the light or display to display the gear, should i be able to get neutral by turning the switch??????

I have also turned it with a screw driver and again only get D & P.

Im in billingham near middlesbrough - If anyone has a working xy switch forsale i would be interested.

would sound like that ones faulty,i may well have one
