stuck rather a lot.(bit scary when a 80 tonne dump truck yanks you out of
the goo!)
any suggestion for what would be a good replacement,i
have about 10k to play with, have been looking at freelanders, but they seem a
bit small.

Believe me, a Freelander IS a bit small!

I have one and I am very disappointed with the back seat. You fold it
up to create room in the cargo area, and the damn thing sits up like
the Andes mountains between the front seat and the cargo area -
distance between upturned seat and rear door is just under 4ft.

Looking longingly at the Nissan X-Trail as a possible replacement. The
X-Trail rear seats fold flat and create a large cargo area. Broadly
similar footprint to the Freelander on the road, and that's important
as it will fit in the garage overnight.

Are you bothered about size/fuel consumption?

I keep looking at trucks with a king cabs as well, thinking of taking the
seats out blacking the windows and putting my van vaults in there, putting a
truckman top on the back and throwing the rest of the tools in there,

How about petrol? You could get a Chevvy Balzer or Ford Explorer within
your budget but you'd have to live with less than 20 to the gallon. OTOH
you'll get (with the back seats down) a bloody big load space and with
the right tyres on decent off-road ability.

TDi Bighorn... same offroad performance, large loadspace ('80s
bighorns/troopers were second only to suburbans in the US) and diesel.

Bummer. I'd go for a Landcruiser VX 4.2 TD those engines are astounding.
Enough torque to rip the transmission off if you want, sadly a lot more
expensive than £10K for a good one.

HiLux? Or do you need an enclosed load space. I suppose you could go for
a HiLux with a truckman top.
