It seems that even the basics of checking oil, water, tyres etc has been forgotten these days. If I ask a customer when they last checked their oil and water I either get told 'I don't do it' or 'it got serviced a year ago and the garage checked it then':eek::eek:.

It's not uncommon for me to come across cars that haven't been serviced for 3 or more years too. I can understand someone going a month or two over the service schedule but some people just don't bother full stop.
I have customers that think an MOT is a full sevice, just cos it passed they assume it will get them to the other side of the country, they are aways shocked when i tell them that all it means is your car has met the MINIMUM safety requirements and i wouldn't drive it across essex let alone to Cornwall ect.

They are ali spacers. It is possible that the studs have been stretched.
Its also possible that youve damaged the spacer where the wheel nuts make contact especialy on the one that came loose.
Just had a thought does the spacer fit the hub correctly (the centre part) cos if it doesn't all the weight of the vehicle will be taken by the nuts and studs and that could cause the problem? same goes for the wheel location on the spacer.

Yeah, spacer sits snuggly on the hub spigot and same with the wheel on the spacer spigot.

On the subject of Alloy wheel nuts on steels.... Why did my Dad's Disco 1 come from Land Rover with 4 Alloys and a steel spare, yet not enough steel wheel nuts (3 on the spare wheel carrier) to fit the wheel....?

Oh wait... That is because some alloy nuts can be used on steel rims... Might look abit odd, but it is perfectly safe if they have the correct chamfer at the end of the nut

Sorry if it has already been said but i can not be arse to read the entire thread.

So why did they not put alloy wheel nuts on the spare as well?
I'd trust using only three steel wheel nuts more than using five alloy nuts on a steel wheel.

Thanks mate, this is what I'd been saying all along! Anyway, went to paddocks to get new brake kit and asked them. They said as long as they are the tapered nuts and not the flat bottom ones they are fine on steels.

Changed discs and pads last night, the spacer that came loose is worn around the chamfers and on the spiggot dia so that's gone in the bin and i'm back the the standard wheel on that corner until I get another spacer, I've locktite'd the other spacer nuts on, and checked what the air gun tightened them to, spacer nuts are meant to be 190Nm, 130Nm for the wheels. Turned the gun down to about half pressure and it tightened them all to about 210Nm, which is close enough to 190Nm for me so I left them at that.

**** me this is the stupid cnut section -chris you know **** all and it shows

Spot on, well, used to. Only the disco now
I think they must be more dislexic than me its the last bit that confusing the poor old gits :D chsri  its sad when the old grey mater sterts to let em down :hysterically_laughi:hysterically_laughi

Please tell me you've checked them spacer nuts with a torque wrench please, air guns cant be relied on.

Yeah, checked them this time... 210Nm.
