Any particular model or engine?

sounds like the starter motor. be careful trying to jump it because if it is the starter motor you'll end up burning your battery out if you keep cranking it and cranking it.
get it off, on the bench and test it, strip it down, clean, inspect and then bench test again. they tend to get filled with muddy water so probably filled with gunk.
Best case scenario it's just your engine and starter motor earths. try taking them off and cleaning them up with a wire brush first.

Have you tried testing the battery with a voltmeter when you start it, let us know what voltage is showing, could be a dead cell in the battery.

Sounds the same as what mine does on occasion and I think its just the starter solenoid sticking. Either a tap with a screwdriver or connecting it directly to the battery always does the job.

Did you cure your problem I have a similar one , and have replaced the starter but it still won't start , would be interested to hear how you solve it. I am in middle of cleaning up earth points

My brother done the same. replaced the starter motor and still wouldn't start. got him to clean the earth's and that's all it turned out to be.
hope it turns out to be the same simple solution for you :)
