Wont engage 3rd or reverse in high but will in low ratio?

I think you must have some weird failure of either the trim around the gearlevers - which could be jamming them, or something similar. As Brian says, above, the two gearboxes are completely seperate from a selection point of view.

Worth checking all the oil levels though - and changing them too.

While you are there make sure your difflock lever works as well.
You may need to drill out the rivets around the gear lever to access from the top.

Cheers

Right ive just driven it if you wiggle the gear knob in gear it selects gear in hi and lo? so could be something bent?
Thanks
id think your bias plate has broken and tab is jamming the lever ,there are other issues you get with the selector yoke but you have to get to bias plate first

Thanks, not exactly a filter you would change as part of normal practice and that would cause the gearbox not to select in HI. Sierrafery was talking about an Auto box which is why I questioned it. Obviously I will have to be less subtle for some of you. ........................:rolleyes::rolleyes:

Cheers

I know, I too was teasing - and to be fair to all, it is more of a strainer than a filter.:D:D

Sounds like the synchros struggling to line up the gears for engaging. So the difference in rotation speed in low box compared to high box will make it easier for the gears to align and slide into place. Just my thoughts. Like others have said, try changing the oil first FOR THE CORRECT GRADE. Don't mess about with cheaper alternatives or "what you can get away with" Land Rover gear boxes just like the oil they were designed for, nuff said.

Also, get one of these for the fluid change if you don't already have one.
