hello i hope someone can maybe shed some light on my problem, i have a disco 1 and have now noticed a very very bad wobble/shacking on the front wheels and steering when hitting a hole in the road at motorway speeds.. this is the only time it happens, and it happens worse if i am slightly cornering at the time of hitting the hole/dip in the road.. the wobble seems to shake the front of the car excessively for a few seconds the returns back to normal driving. I hope this is enought to explain and would appreciate any feedback. Cheers. :eek:
 
This has come up dozens of times this year even , try a search ! Im not having a go at you...when worried the first thing one does is to ask , and thats fine , but if people have taken ages typing and their typing isnt too fast (me) then they may not be that inclined to do it again.

However, I will try and find a link,again, and post it...maybe since it gets asked so often we could get it sticky - ed ?

or look in FAQs,same applies as above !

seriously though , yes, they need the preload setting if they have been apart , whoever did it should have set the pre load as part of the reassembly process - but it is not difficult to do . A spring balance , such as used by fishermen , is probably the cheapest easiest sourced option but there are other methods .

Dont be overwhelmed by it all ! Look at each stage as a seperate entity , that way it is not hard to follow. Its well within the scope of any DIYer . Argos,ebay,fishing tackle or garden shops will all have a spring balance weighing scale for cheap .

spring balance 0-25kg | eBay

reminded that they are sold for weighing luggage at asda and tesco now , too . You may want one that weighs smaller amounts rather than 50 or 100kg as you are only measuring a few pounds for this job . Handy for weighing parcels later on !:)
 
remember that swivels with 2 bearings dont need much preload 2lb at most ,swivels with bush at top and bearing at the bottom need preload 8-10lb

Thank you very much for you informed reply, i maybe strip it down today and have a good look, i also have a set of scales, as i am a fsherman. once again many thanks..
