Hi i have a 89 defender with no stereo or interior light. There is no obvious wiring in place to connect things to. Can anyone tell me the best place to run the wires to and from or is this a job for the pros? Im ok getting stuck in with spanners but no nowt about electrics:)

i had that problem on my old 90..
Just had a bunch of wires stuck on the dash.. all i did was buy a stereo, usually they come with a connector with all the naked wires out the back.. just matched em up to the ones hanging about on the dash..
just tested different combinations of wires, always remember to earth one to the bodywork..
i know thats not much help.. but ye just try different combinations.. i got there in the end and i know nothing about electrics..

as for the interior light, i found only needed an earth wire and a live wire, no ignition wire was needed.. so if you find the right ones, just attach some longer (correct thickness) wires to them, run them through the dash up the side of windscreen and across underneath the headlining..

Piece of ****... (he says!!)

Are there no connectors at all for your radio? Its quite odd if a previous owner has cut them out.

Give us a bit more info about your landy. Is it a military job that has no creature comforts? or just a butchered ex farm landy. What body style is it?

Also, give a rough location, just in case anyone local can give you a hand.

For the interior light, whip off the bit of trim beside the windscreen on the right hand side. I'd expect two wires, pink, and pink with a black trace. Pink is fused live which feeds the interior light, the other is switched ground (switched via the door switches).

Thanks for the replies. My landy is a 89 defender county but it was totally rebuilt before i bought it. Not ex mod though. I will look under the trim as you suggested and see whats there. So even though it appears it has never had a light or radio there should still be wires in place?

My 90 is a 1989 and has NO interior light wirring that I have seen nor does the headlining show any signs of it.

Looking at putting something in so keeping an eye on this.
