Wipers not working

As the snow came down my wipers stopped working so dashed home, changed fuse this did not make any difference, any ideas what could have gone wrong, could it be the wiper motors gone?
Ive read about there being a cable can that fail?

Thanks for any help.

vehicle is a 1996 300tdi 130

wipersare cable operated. motor pushes cable back & forth

When ye turn yer wiper switch on can ye hear the motor trying to work?
