I suspect there is a fault with my wiper stalk switch and I would like to change it. Manuals say rermove the steering wheel for access. Is it necessary to rermove the wheel ? Any advice appreciated, thank you.

Before you do that, check the individual pins on the connection on the wiper motor itself as they can work loose. Also check for corrosion on the motor connections. It's rare for the wiper switch to be the cause.

If you do remove the steering wheel make sure the battery is disconnected for 20 mins or so first. You don't want the airbag to go off in your face.
Also be very careful of the slip ring, it carries the horn and airbag connections but will only turn 4.5 or so turns lock to lock. Make sure the wheels are straight before starting and ensure the slip ring is in the centre before refitting the wheel.

Fortunately I did not need to touch the wiper swich. Replacing the wiper motor cured the problem. Thanks for the help.

Nice one, I always cringe and keep my head back when disconnecting the airbag as if it did go off it's like a bomb. Watch some of the videos of guys being blown into the air on youtube to see how powerful they are.
BTW does anyone know why the single wipe on my new purchase doesn't work? I push the stalk down and nothing.

Does the intermittent action work ok?

Mine stopped doing single wipe about a month ago, everything else is fine.
When I get chance I shall investigate further.

When I worked in the garage. We sometimes had to detonate end of life airbags. We had a really sturdy cage to contain them because they can be deadly. However they've are much safer to handle, than we are led to believe. Just make sure that the battery has been disconnected for a few minutes for complete safety. The ignitor requires a pulse of electricity, or it'll do nothing. Simply unplugging it shouldn't give it the required pulse, so no BANG!!

What about when plugging it back in. That is when I really keep the head back, regardless of how long the battery is disconnected.

The airbag needs electricity to make it go BANG!!
So as long as the airbag is reconnected before the battery is connected, there's no problem. The SRS ECU monitors the airbag detonator circuit, for the presence of the airbag. If no airbag is detected, it puts the SRS light on. It should never detonate the ignitor, unless the SRS impact threshold is exceeded.
There are backup capacitors in the SRS ECU, to maintain detonation power, just in case the vehicle battery is disconnected or destroyed in an impact. This is why it's suggested to wait for a few minutes, just in case there is an impact that exceeds the detonation threshold, while the airbag is being handled. It's unlikely to happen, but it's always best to be cautious, just in case. ;)
