You should have used a tree strop around tree.
Place as low down on the tree as possible.
Wrapping the wire around the tree is a big no no.
Hooking the hook back onto the cable also a big no no.
Use a winch blanket over the wire in case it lets go.
Don't let anyone stand within range of the wire if it snaps.

I would have gone for a larger tree further away, the more wire you pay out the stronger the pull.

Cheers for that. Yeah the strop has been mentioned to me but the other stuff is new and good to know! Is a winch blanket just as it sounds, any old blanket to put over the rope to lessen the force if it does break?

I noticed 2 kinks in the cable as well when we were reeling it out. I assume its not a rush out and replace the cable job but something I should keep my eye on?

nice little site.

from watching people winch they tend to have a strop round the tree do it up with a shackle then attach winch to the shackle.
The other way is to sling it round a tree and attach it back onto your jate rings. Hope this is ok im sure someone will correct me if im wrong. I dont have a winch on my disco just watched a lot of winch challenge vids etc

Tree strop around tree, usually about 2 m long, done up with rated shackle, attach winch hook to shackle.
Never wrap the winch cable around anything, what you've seen is the use of a snatch block, this is attached to the tree strop shackle. Rope goes through snatch block pulley and is then attached back to the vehicle. Advantage is twice as much line is deployed increasing pull, plus by using a pulley you effectively double the pull strength.

There are specific winch blankets available, but an old coat, rug or similar does the job.
Wire rope tends to kink, as long as the wire isn't damaged it should be fine. When you come to replace it, I'd look towards using plasma rope instead, it's much safer and easier to use.

have a look on youtube for wire winch ropes snapping and then decide if you wanna replace your kinked wire rope.

i saw one snap at a pay n play day and the end hook smashed a classic rear window and bedded itself in the passenger headrest

i went out that week and bought a plasma rope.

u certainly dont want anyone standing as close as they were to the rope tho

As well as the Caravan racing at Wigan at the weekend, we also did a bit of serious driving and I got to have a bit of winch experience. Its already been pointed out to me that we didn't winch very safely but I wonder if anyone else can offer any tips or do's and dont's? The winching bit is about 3 minutes in.

Nearly everything has been said apart from wearing gloves aways were gloves when winching

Guys, thanks for the input I've had here about winching and what we were doing wrong.

I've started to look at a Dyneema Rope and Hawse replacement for my existing cable, which doesn't look to healthy anyway.

I just wondered if anyone can offer me some advice on what to go for?

They all seem to be in 100ft lengths but there is 10, 11, and 12 mm versions. I'm also not sure if there is a quality I should aim for?

My motor is a modified 110 (its in the video above) so I guess it a fair bit heavier than standard.

Ill be ordering from David at goodwinch.

with a breaking load of 12000 kilos you'll do well to bust it in non competition situations.
