Winches - Electric or hydraulic?

Simple question, which should I get?

The landy will get a few chances to play off road, and with my skills is bound to spend more time stuck than driving :bump2:

Generally it will be used around my bit of land while cutting trees and doing general maintenance.

If I fit hydraulics, can I attach other things like a log splitter or is it just for the winch.

The only advice I have found from the web is from people trying to sell the kit. Now being in sales myself I know some of us are very helpful and accurate but a majority just want you to buy their product!

Have you thought about a Tirfor? Plenty of pulling power, you can winch from pretty much anywhere. Not permanently attached so you can take it out when you don't need it and you can use it for pulling down and shifting trees and large logs etc.

Hydaulic winches are undoubtably impressive pieces of kit, but they are more expensive to set up I believe. You would need the winch to start with which are more expensive than electric. Then you would also need the pump, piping etc etc etc. and should your engine fail, you have no winch!!

Electric have lots of options as well and range in price from a couple of hundred up to a couple of thousand! Less expence to set up, basically you could get away with just the winch and for safety a cut off switch. Realistically you would want to add a split charge system and a second battery.

Hydraulic are generally bombproof, electric can be less so! If looked after they are both fine.

Personally I reckon a cheapy electric from the bay of E will more than be OK for you, £250 ish plus the bumper, split charge and second battery, all in £600 ish??
