hey guys I’m looking at purchasing a winch for my 300tdi defender 90 and was wondering if anyone had any recommendations as to how much pulling power and brands at the moment I’m looking at rhino winches.
Thanks I’m advance

How often you going to use it?
rec or challenge truck?
Do you think winch maintenance is a good thing?

Wire or Dyneema?

Cheers

It’s a recreational use aim to use it at pay and plays and when my mates disco sport gets bogged green laning as usual. I have no problems with maintenance (I wouldn’t have bought a defender if I did ) I’m not sure on the wire or dyneema so If you have any advice about that id like some

I've had sterling service from my entry level Warrior Samurai winch, 12,000lb single line pull at acceptable speeds and it's been great for the last 7yrs.

If you have surplus cash then I highly recommend a Red Winch, highest quality British engineering and machining on the market.

Thanks the warrior looks good unfortunately I don’t have that sort of spare cash as much as I’d love it.

Do you have a bumper that will handle the winch?
Do you understand winch practice? snatch blocks etc?

I like a nylon rope, but then I am prepared to spool it out and wash it between uses.

Cheers
Yes I’m plenty familiar with winch practice and snach blocks as for the bumper I’m going to fabricate my own from the existing bumper and set the winch back into the grill I plan on reinforcing both attachment points by welding plated so I can bolt sideways though the chassis rails and I wouldn’t mind washing it out after looking at it I think I prefer the nylon for the weight saving but not sure how much it would put up the cost

Red winches are porn I don't think I could justify spending that amount on a winch though.
My mate has the same winch as you & he raves about it, I will be looking for a winch but im
getting a new D1 first hopefully this week :D:D Ive got a spare winch bumper I might make
a rear winch set up later on.

Some winches come ready spooled with rope over cable for about an extra £100 on top, doesn't save that much weight in reality but it is 100% safer in almost every respect.

You will have a lot of fabrication work ahead of you as the Defender bumper is nowhere near strong enough for anything bar nudging sheep or cattle round the field, far easier and probably more aesthetically pleasing to save a few more pennies and buy a decent winch bumper, I know that it all comes down to cash but for safeties sake, deffo worth it as winching puts a lot of very high stresses and forces into play.

The Amazon product rhino winches aren't any cheaper than the Warrior to be fair.

Yep I’ve very tempted by the warrior as for the rope I might get a cable first and then get a rope later. As for the bumper I’m not a fan of the tubular stuff or any of the like I much prefer the ones which look like a standard hence why I was planning on making my own I’ll take a look but no one seems to make one which sets the winch back into the grill so not sure what I can do that bar fabricating my own

I’ve a used warn 9.5ti for sale, £350,
Retail at over a grand, just serviced with new brake and Albright solenoid.

Mine was cable for years before I swapped over to rope, just make sure you got good gloves ;)

You'll have to have a search for it but on the net somewhere there is a build where the guy used a piece of 6mm plate to make a winch tray that sat beneath the chassis rails and he had drilled out the chassis rails and welded in crush tubes, I think it was 4 on each side in M10 flavour and left the standard bumper in place but cut a hole where the fairlead goes and then bolted to the front of the winch tray that butted up against the back of the bumper.

I will go off for a hunt.

Jesus wept, can't find it anywhere, but google seems to be having issues all round these days but you get the drift, post up if you go down that route, be cool to see how you get on.
I had a look myself and I’m going to take a look tomorrow thinktit might be possible to but on a plae between the front cross member and the bumper with the fair lead on the bumper and the winch on the plate which I can attach to the front cross member

Another thought...
If the winch is hidden you will be on your knees trying to find the free spool.
And I bet your motor is in the thickest mud wedged into a ditch.

Today I was very lucky when a defender 110 tuned up at work and I had a badger at his winch which would be similar to what i spoils be getting at he has infact mounted it upside down behind the bumper with the winch bracket attached to the front cross member see photos attached after looking at this and consider img what was very wisely suggested about it being berried in mud I think I’m going to go down the route of a bumper similar to those the power companies use. Thanks all very much for the help! [GALLERY=][/GALLERY]
